My local arcade beats your local arcade

Post by Elixir »

Well, it isn't "local" since it's about an hour and a half into Auckland's central, but I popped into Yifan's yesterday on my way to work and they have Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Ikaruga, IIDX 10th, and 19XX. Bullshit, I know. I only stopped for a minute so I didn't have much time to look around for other things (there was this gay korean thing where you wave your arms like a retard too), but well, that's what they have so far.

Actually I found a list online:

Street Fighter 4
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Blazblue
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike
KoF 2002, 97, 98, probably the rest but who cares...
Tekken 6,5 and Dark Resurrection, 4 and Tag
Samurai Shodown Tenka(?), 5 special(?), 1-4 on mame cabs.
Guilty Gear XX# Reload
Melty Blood: Act Cadenza Ver.B
Street Fighter World Warrior, Hyper Fighting/Turbo, Alpha 2, Alpha 3, Anniversary Edition
X-men vs Street Fighter
Marvel vs Capcom
SNK vs Capcom Chaos
Capcom vs SNK 2
Soul Calibur 3
Project Justice
Virtua Fighter 4
Super Dragonball Z
Neogeo Battle Colliseum
Dead or Alive 2

Stick/cab type: Japanese style balltops, sitdown head to head cabs.

orz

This is a fighting-only list, so I'm not sure what else they have just yet. This is the best arcade I've ever seen (I've been to Hokkaido but their arcade scene is shit) I'd like to go back today but I unfortunately lack any means of transport, but I'll visit there as soon as possible. If they have stuff like cave shmups I'm going to freak out.

even just the fighting games listed make it a worthwhile trip for sure.....

nice find.....im envious :P

they have a couple of arcades left here in toronto, but they are in the suburbs at the far end of the city from me...probably over 2 hours by public transit.....

i will have to make the trip one day just to check it out.....its just a long trip to justify when for the most part i have better agmes in my living room...and better cabs to play them on

Quebec City's arcades have next to nothing but DDR, Rush, Hydro Thunder and crap like. No point in freezing your butt to go play a game in a deserted arcade at 1$ per credit, really. If they had decent fighters and some competition (most important), I might go though.

Which reminds me of a guy I played against in Montreal about 12 years ago. He was playing SF (can't remember which exactly) with one hand, thumb on the stick and remaining fingers on the buttons. He played Dhalsim and was impossible to touch.

I actually play better while having a conversation on my cellphone sometimes. I believe it is simply because I am more relaxed.

For Elixir,

Can't hurt to ask if the Yifan arcade owner/manager if he or she would be willing to carry Cave shmup PCBs. If they carry an extensive list of arcade fighting games like you list, they should have no problem getting Cave PCBs (or any other arcade shmup title for that matter). ^_~

If they don't have any already, I'll definitely ask. But even the fighting community is pretty small in NZ; most people who care about fighters in NZ are into Tekken and that's pretty much it. I assume the community is even smaller for shooters.

Arcades around here are really boring. They only have KOF, Metal Slug, DDR and other random games no one cares about. Nevermind the insane prices per credit ($2-5 bucks, depending on the game).

Aside from a 1943 cab I found recently, I can't find any shmups anywhere else.

Excluding the credit prices [WTF?!?!], that sounds better than any arcade around these parts [N.E. PA]... you atleast have KOF + Metal Slug...

[edit] Also, Metal Slug, boring? You must be crazy...
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Metal Slug itself isn't boring, but after n sequels I'm just sick of it. Same with KOF.

Well our arcades probably won't be able to top off Elixir's, but we have two arcades that are pretty much well known in Toronto.

The better of the two has:
BlazBlue
SFIII 3rd Strike x 3
SFIV
Taiko no Tatsujin 11
DDPDOJ
Strikers 1945 II
Drummania/Guitarfreaks V4
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.
Gundam VS. Gundam
Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 DX
Tekken 6

While the other arcade has IIDX DistorteD, Progear, Brave Blade, DDR Supernova and uhhh.... 3rd Strike, CVS2, SVC Chaos, and GGXX Slash.

My local arcades are shitty so it's unfair competition.

My local arcades have pretty much every fighting game, but the shooters are very few at the mo.
Muchi Muchi Pork
Mush1
Progear
Strikers Plus
RFJet
Strikers 1945
Raiden II & III
Air Assault

Although in the last 2-3 years we've had Ketsui, Esp2, Strikers 1999, Batrider, Fire Shark, Pink Sweets and Ibara.

Also they had a bunch of uh, you know those arcade soccer/tennis games. I don't know their names. Whole row of 'em as well. I wasn't able to take any pictures (actually I forgot about this, I'll ask next time I'm there) but they're basically in isles and the size of the place is the same size as your small supermarket. In fact, I'm pretty sure it used to be a supermarket or something like that.

So anyway yeah, I played Futari 1.5 with Abnormal Palm and got up to the Stage 4 boss on my first try. Second try, Normal Palm (which I didn't really like as much as Abnormal Palm) and I made it to the beginning/mid of Stage 5. Both original. I didn't really have anything but skill and some memory of past Futari vids I've seen behind me. Things like those icicles which cancel jellyfish into gems on stage 3 (I think it's 3) helped me out here.

I am definitely going back to this arcade in the future, although it's still noisy as hell and is almost headache inducing because of it. There's seriously too many arcade cabinets/games to list, the list is at least quadruple that of the above list in the original post.

Edit: The Futari cab had INSANELY loose buttons and sticks. I'm guessing Sanwa; to the point where I actually bombed by mistake. Felt good even though I suck with sticks and am far better playing with Saturn pads. I didn't see a single American styled cab in the entire arcade.. I only saw balltops.

I prefer Sanwa sticks and buttons personally, but those could have been extremely loose ones I suppose.

Sounds like a good arcade despite the flaws, nice that there's one out in NZ!

Yeah it's better than Vancouver's arcade. Our arcade had DDP:DOJ, Furati, and then... they got rid of them for something crappy like more gundam cabs.

They still have Raiden 4, Zero gunner 2, 1945 III, and DDP2. Even had Karous at one point.

They had melty blood verB, NG:BC, and KOFXI. But replaced all that with tatsunoko vs capcom, a whole bunch of SFIV cabs, and KOFUM.

and for some reason they think it's a good idea to have half the place filled with strange carnival games, ugh.

The place has some nice games, but it's so cramped, hot, and even smelly in there that I never want to go.

Sunnyvale Golfland!

- IIDX 15
- Pop'n Music 16 (the reason I go there)
- DJMAX Technika (loc test)
- Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 DX
- BlazBlue
- Tekken 5
- Tekken 6
- CvS2
- MvC2
- SF3: 3rd Strike
- Hokuto no Ken
- Time Crisis 4
- Time Crisis 3
- Mario Kart AGP2 (but no card slots, so it's worthless since you can't go past mission level 4 or use the more awesome guns)
- GHOST Squad (normal edition with no card slots, even more worthless)
- DDR SuperNOVA 2
- Ultracade
- Star Wars Trilogy Arcade
- KoF 11
- Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
- among others...

Sadly, outside of the Ultracade cab, no shuutingu geemu.

Hm, apparently they have Ikaruga as well. I've yet to see it there myself, though, so I may have missed it originally. Since I see a bit of footage of my arcade on Youtube, I assume it'll be alright to take some pictures. Next time I go, I'll take my camera and some extra batteries.
