So, my brother spends money like it's water and got me an iPod touch for Christmas so I've been looking at the free apps in the store... There's a Dragon Force [Light] that's one level of middling shmupping: constant fire and movement by tilting the screen
Anyone else try it? Anything better worth my time, even over a free d/l?

Maybe you already know this, maybe you don't, but SPACE DEADBEEF is a very unoriginal name (in a similar way as Foobar2000). DEADBEEF is the most famous hex debug value.
The greatest name for a game ever would have been Sigma Star, but Wayforward ruined it by tacking on a Saga at the end.

By tacking on the "Saga" portion to the Sigma Star moniker, it does denote some RPG themes. Why not just make the game a pure shmup from the beginning and not have to play through the RPG portions?
All those cool mini shmups for the Iphone/Ipod sounds intriguing. Now if Apple were to release a Iphone or Ipod with traditional d-pad setup and some real tactical push buttons...we'd have a winner on our hands. Would be like having a super-charged Gameboy Micro but with plently of CPU power to spare. ^_~
Space Deadbeef is pretty decent; and yes it's for free.
I also got "Chopper", which cost 10$ or so when I first got it and it's pretty shitty.
I think there's not much serious gaming you can expect from the iPhone/iPod, imo it lacks a decent control mechanism. Still good for some casual, quick to play and of course free stuff.
Yeah. I finally found and tried rRootage on iPhone/touch, and it's incredibly awkward... Ika mode especially was pretty sensitive to polarity switching, and contending with being unable to see through TWO fingers made it worse.
A valiant effort, at least...

Dragon Force bloody sucks [it's really boring], Space Deadbeef is awesome [OMG, a fixed hori STG! Unpossibly awesome], rRootage is awesome. I was able to work with rRootage's controls pretty well, one time in IKA mode it didn't switch when I pressed the second finger to the screen, but it wasn't too bad.
PS: Also, Deadbeef's controls aren't so bad. They really aren't. Around the edges of the screen though, they suck, especially when on the boss [I died 2-3 times because of the control moving up when I was going down near the bottom of the screen...].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Touchscreen is horrible for shooters.
IMO best way to fix it would be to have "virtual d-pad" outside game's play area. I wonder if someone will ever implement that.

Not sure--Trace [a drawing puzzle game] has that, and it's annoyingly unresponsive. Perhaps because I have fingernails
