IS Darius Gaiden better than G Darius?

Post by Mischief Maker »

I'm considering picking up a copy of Taito Legends 2 (when applying for the bar, it's best to avoid even the tiniest stupid risks), and I see the PC version does not have G-Darius, which is a bummer. However, I remember someone saying on these forums that Darius Gaiden, whic is included, is the better game, graphics aside. Could you please elaborate on that?

Personally- I like 2d Darius Gaiden a bit more than the 3d (2d gameplay) G-Darius. Both are awesome games, don't get me wrong- but I'm a little more partial to Darius Gaiden myself.

Have you considered emulation at all to test the waters first?

in before "they both suck ololololol"

I like Darius Gaiden better, although I like them both, but you're not asking the right question. The answer is Bubble Symphony, Cadash, Pop'n Pop, Rayforce is way better than Balloon Bomber, G-Darius, Raystorm, Sylvalion. Get the Xbox/PC version and supplement with PS1 G-Darius and Raystorm. Both have US releases even. Or you could just buy both, doh.

Man, Darius Gaiden has 2D sprites that have held up OK.

G Darius has polygonal graphics which look pretty rough nowadays. But it is by far a much better game.

Awesome worlds to travel through, crazy bosses, and you even have that cool super laser that you have in Border Down(same guys made it).

It's awesome. I could never get into Gaiden, despite owning it for years. I'm sure others will disagree with me, but G Darius is a lot better. It's one of the best side scrolling shmups, except that the graphics look a bit rough(they were phenomenal in the day).

Hope that helps.

The emulation of Darius Gaiden on Taito Legend 2 is very bad.

But Darius Gaiden is a better game.

Get Taito Legends 2 on PS2, and find another way to play Darius Gaiden.

Bad emulation? What about Elevator Action 2 (Secretly the real reason I'm considering this purchase)?

Yes, tell us more about these emulation compilations.

The only problems I know of with Darius Gaiden in TL2 is slow autofire (not an emulation fault) and some framerate issues.

I can't say i've really had a problem with the frame rate, somebody who is more familiar with the PCB would notice them more. I think to say that the emulation is bad is somewhat of an overstatement, not 100% perfect but really only flaws that would annoy a purist. Unless there are some other problems I'm not aware of.

Aren't you given the rights to the ROM with Taito Legends 2? Can't you just play it on MAME then?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Nope, legally you may only make copies of the media you actually own. So you would need to own the PCB, and dump the ROM yourself, if you don't want to do anything illegal.

From the Taito Legends 2 thread
Samurai Fox wrote:So, now I know (and am a little bit disheartened) that the US PS2 Taito Legends 2 has framerate bugs with Darius Gaiden and Elevator Action 2, although I kinda figured that when I started to notice some serious drops in the framerate myself. Other games like Dungeon Magic and Arabian Magic seems to suffer from framerate flaws as well, which leads me to wonder if it was only the Taito F3 games that were emulated poorly.
I too, believe it is the Taito F3 system that is pretty hard to emulate for the ps2.

Darius gaiden not only has big slowdown issues but also seems slower overall (55fps maybe)?

So... The arcade ROM isn't part of the game in the collection?

It's a toss-up, really. I think they're both technically quite good games, and I enjoy both thoroughly, despite the relatively high frustration level w/ the bosses. I guess it's a matter of taste, more than anything. I think Darius Gaiden is perhaps slightly better in some ways, but then again G Darius is slightly better in others. So it comes down to taste - if you want hardcore 2-D, DG is the way to go. If you're looking for a progression in the series w/ the most advanced weapon system of the bunch, G-Darius is your answer.

It must be said that G.Darius on TL2 is way faster and better/harder than the PS1 version. The PS1 version is way too easy. I am told that the TL2 version is closer to the arcade.

The PS1 G.Darius has Boss Rush mode if you have to have that.

There hasn't been a case to test the waters (as far as I know), but under mask work law even that might be illegal.

Anyway, I like G. Darius a little better than Gaiden.

Actually that's a good question; normally the only legal backup the end user can make is the one for their particular ROM they purchased AFAIK.
i.e you are allowed to dump the PCB in your possession but are not allowed to download a ROM from another source...

I think the only legal way to own a digital copy of Darius Gaiden in this case, is making an ISO of your TAITO Legends.
Sooo... No, owning the MAME PCB ROM is illegal if you don't own that particular PCB.

On topic:
Add another guy to the 'Darius Gaiden is better than G-Darius' crowd.
G-Darius has some cool boss fights and all(Dimension Diver is awesome),
but Darius Gaiden has a very distinct atmosphere with the crazy music & special effects and all...

I hear that the PS1 version basically runs slower than the arcade version. But I hear that the emulation on the TL stuff is kinda bad.

What's the scoop? I'd like to have a better version of G Darius, if possible.

Actually, the PC version of TL2 (and TL1) installs the arcade ROMs on your PC. All you have to do is zip up the folders, and drop them in MAME to play them (use an older version of MAME for the TL1 ROMs).

So really, get the PC version of TL2 to play everything on it, and then grab the PS2 version for it's exclusives. Both games should only cost you about $15 altogether these days.

Graphics aside? Pssh. The graphics in Gaiden are enjoyable in their own gross-out grungy way. Much like Metal Black.

G-Darius sucks graphically by today's standards, but aside from that it's far better.
And you should have made a poll. :P

The best version of G-Darius is the PCB version, hands down. ^_~

Take your pick of either G-Darius PCBs in two different flavors: original version and improved Version 2 variant.

Sure, both G-Darius PCBs run on souped-up PSX hardware, of course...that is a given.

I'm a big fan of G-Darius myself. Despite it being a little rough around the edges, theres so much going on and the bosses are probably some of the best examples of what can be done with 3D bosses (despite actually being on a 2D plane). The music in Darius Gaiden is amazing though.

The Xbox version is actually supposed to be better then the PS2 but neither compilation runs on the 360 sadly so despite owning both i can't confirm this.

Your probably better hunting down the Japanese PS2 versions which play slightly faster but you'll need to chip your PSX.
