My experiences working this season in retail

Post by themachinist »

Hey y'all. I've been working at circuit city as a seasonal employee for about a month. I'm sure there are those of you out there who have worked retail so whatever I have to say won't be anything new. I suppose this is a thread for me to voice my complaints and rants.

But really, my job hasn't been that bad. I am a "Product Specialist" (whoopee) and I help people in the computer area and digital camera area. My managers are cool (but my supervisers are lazy and assholes), and my co-workers are alright. Most customers who come in are amiable and friendly or don't want to be bothered and that's ok with me. But there is just this constant wave of assholes who come through and suddenly I find myself empathizing with the psychos who shoot up malls.

For one thing, just because I wear the red shirt (our uniform) why am I suddenly the company? One lady came in and after I took every effort to help her find what she needed and was a perfect gentleman throughout she decided to say, "You guys are going out of business because you're so goddamn greedy. The economy is suffering because of these corporations." I was shocked and angered but I kept my cool.
"Ma'am, I'm just a college kid who needs money working as a seasonal employee."
"Yeah, you're just one of the low guys. What do you think everyone else is doing? Grinding it out."
"Ok..."
"What are you studying?"
"Engineering."
"Well that's not going to help." Then she left.. It would've been worth getting fired over shit talking the fuck out of her. It pisses me off that she presumes to Know me, that she thinks she can talk to people that way when she knows nothing about them. For fucks sake.

Another scenario is I guess stupid people:

People come in expecting everything to be in stock. It's the goddamn holiday season.
"I'm sorry sir, this item isn't in stock. I can check other locations to see if they have any...?"
"Well no, I'm here right now. Look at this advertisement, you put out this huge advertisement for this item on sale and then you don't even have it? That's just not right, not right at all. I'm going to raise a big stink about this!"
"Ok sir."

People don't know jack shit:
"Did you want to get a case for this digital camera?"
"Well, it doesn't come with one?"
"No I'm afraid most cameras don't."
"Alright then." He picks out a case.
"I think you'll also want a memory card."
"No I don't think so. I'll just go with what it has."
"The camera doesn't come with one so you won't be able to take any photos..."
"What?!?" He is incredulous like it's my fault. "So it doesn't come with a case or a memory card?"
"I'm afraid not."
"Well then, I don't think I'm going to buy anything. I'm going to shop around for a better deal."

People don't know jack shit2:
"Can I help you find something today?"
"How much are the Nintedo DSs?"
"They are 129.99"
"So what does it all come with?"
"They retail for 129.99 for just the system."
"It doesn't come with a case or a game?" She has an extremely bitchy tone at this point.
JESUS CHRIST.

Somehow I'm sidetracked into the DVD player section from helping customers and then a lady beckons me over and asks, "So I see this Senns DVD player is on sale for 89.99. Is this brand any good?"
"Sorry but I'm not familiar with this brand so I wouldn't be able to say."
"You mean you work here and you don't know anything about it?" with this look on her face.
What the fuck! .

I wish people would do some fucking research!

I'm not some lifeless robot who can spit out information about every item in the store! I don't give a shit about circuit city but I try my best to do my damn job. I'm a person too!!!!!!

Yes, working in retail really does change your opinion on the entire human race. It did for me anyway. It used to amaze me and piss me off, but now it really just humors me.

Everyone should have to work retail for a year before being allowed to have kids.

Thank god I've never had to work at retail. I used to work in the computer lab at school though and some people were real dicks.

I work in a Hardware store so it is pretty casual. I mostly just load trucks and such. I'd say that maybe 1 in 1000 customers are assholes where I work. People pretty know what they want when the come in, I just have to get them there and brush them off.

Yeah my previous work experiences (other than this and a grocery store) have been in smaller work environments with middle aged+ folks and although they may have been a little boring atleast they weren't jackasses. I thought the grocery store was the worst but now I can't decide between it and circuit city  .

I've worked retail for 14 years now, imagine all the crap I've gone through and forgotten over the years. Yet I'm not stark raving mad yet.

aah, nothing like working retail. I used to work in a department store where I was in charge of the toy department. Angry parents during christmas really helps keep you in the christmas spirit lol.
Once youve worked there for a while you come to realise a thing or two. You cant explode and shit talk customers. You really want to but cant as you will get your ass fired.
Instead you learn how to be a sarcastic asshole that can piss off the customers even more and still keep a smile on your face and a nice tone of voice.

Its like people think its ok to take out their rage on a retail employee after theyve had a shitty day at work. To them youre a greedy fuck who tries to squeeze every penny out of them.

So to them youre not human at all :P

Im glad I got out of that after 6 years and got done with my degree in advanced computer science. Like GaijinPunch said, it really motivates you to finish your education.

Does anybody know this story from David Sedaris where he works as an elf in a big store in New York during christmas season? It´s basically all the retail horror stories melted together in one big piece.

I myself worked retail, but only at two pretty small organic food stores (heh, I would benefit from eating some more organic stuff myself, but oh well...) where the people usually were very friendly and educated.

Though I have this one story to share: At the first store I worked a woman came to me and wanted me to package her cake in a very complicated way a co-worker used to do for her. She started it with saying "Oh well, you´re not going to do it as well as she does anyways, but whatever..." and I tried my hardest to wrap the cake up as she described. BUT OF COURSE it wasn´t even nearly good enough. She said "Well, forget about it. I knew you wouldn´t do it as good as her."

Anyways, you haven´t lived through real horror until you´ve seen how incredibly annoying parents can be. I worked at the coat check of a small theatre a year ago, and during the plays for kids we were handing out sitting pillows for children who were too small to see the stage otherwise. However, if a certain mom decided that her precious snowflake of a daughter or son absolutely needed such a pillow even if the child was clearly big enough and we told her that we needed to save the pillows for the really small children, said mom would really freak out and on one encounter a mom even attempted to GET OVER THE COUNTER AND GET A PILLOW HERSELF. And all this while her kids watched her! I would NEVER want my kids to act babyish like that. I don´t know if they want to prove "Look here, I get what I want and don´t take no for an answer!", but the real message here is "Ignore the rules, and whine and shout until you get what you want, even if it is petty crap".

One little trick I learned from this is to just imagine what a horrible, annoying life people as unfriendly, uptight and humorless as these people must have, always being enraged and unsatisfied, and then I start to feel better, that I´m at least not a bitter arrogant asshole. And, of course: Don´t take anything personal. They don´t know you, and you don´t care for them, so just let it breeze through you. Otherwise the sheer stupidity of a large mass of people would be enough to drive you down a bridge, retail or not. Assholes are everywhere, just see them as the narrowminded ant people that they are.

I´m currently jobless, but I´ve sworn to myself that my next job will be something else, like working with disabled people again. Seriously, my civil service year at a workshop for disabled people was the most intersting year ever, and even if each of them have their own quirks, most of them are incredibly friendly. If you compare them to some of the people who shop at certain places, you really have to wonder who the real retards are. (I know that sounds cheesy, but it´s the truth.) Maybe it´s because most of them don´t have this outrageous sense of entitlement, demanding attitudes and egocentric arrogance drilled into their minds.

A friend of mine went to work in a Starbucks in Arizona, where the customer is KING, and they know it and abuse it badly.
I couldn't believe the lengths Starbucks USA goes to pander to the customer - sooo many choices and additions to what should be a basic coffee order, and you have to repeat the whole thing back to the customer while the manager perches on your shoulder.

One morning my friend reached his limit and FLIPPED when a drive-in customer gave him too much shit. He punched the screen through (Mills-Style) and stormed out the door.

I used to work the customer services desk in a shop called tesco ( biggest UK chain in the UK I think) I was under stained and not payed the wage of a CS staff but they still abused me over it. People would bring back games and say they did not work we had no means check games so we had to take it at face value.

DVD would be brought back in broken and they would demmand a new one. it would clearley be labled region 0 which is the region they sell if they cant be arsed making mutiple regions and you try explaining that to a customer so after she brought this DVD back three time some stupid elvis live DVD each one with a store value of 45GBP I was just saying it wont work becuase your dvd wont take region 0. to which she replies, are you sugesting im stupid. You cant even answer that?!

but the thing that pissed me off was how they treated there staff. I had a broken DVD i bought it new and it did not work on any of my three dvd players or my pc (which is region free *winks* ) and the manager called my a liar and then suggested I just download my movies if im going to pirate them.v

The thing that really anoyed me about this was one of the managers was pirating movies just out at the cinema and also porn and this manager which made the shitty comment was in to his really brutal porn. And he thinks that give his the right to pass comment on me as a customer (I was also clocked off and in my civilian gear)

I would get people calling me to complain and scream at me down the phone I call me all kinds and tell me they were going to kill me and i would just put the phone down on them. Until one decided to call my boss and pretned to cry over the phone and say i was telling him I was going to kill his familly and ect . . . I also go a written warning for that.

One time when i worked at a fair ground one of the bosses lackys (who he was also fucking behind his wifes back) wrote a memo about how we presnet ourselves and it was full of spelling mistakes namley the making the managers name from Mr Gilmore to Ms Gipmore I found this helarious and told another I mean my spellings are bad but if im creating a memo on office I run a spell check and make sure I get peoples names right.

next thing I know is im being called in to the office by the manager seem ive been making fun of his name and he was very angry about that. I just replied that the spelling was out. At this point he produces a new corrected revision of the memo. the stupid little bitch had been around collected all of them up and replaced them. So he sitting at his desk while shes standing behind him waving her hands and mouthing out pleeeeease dont tell him. So I reveal theres a first revision and If he wants to see my copy, before i can finish saying that he launches across the table and grabs me by the throat saying your not so funny now are you I cant speak but when he drops me I fucking push him and scream COME ON LETS GO! he stops looks at me and laughs for a min. . . Takes out a cigaret and offer me one. I dont reply. then he says. You know what I always liked you. You stand up for yourself and dont take any bullshit not it would be in your best intrest if you did not tell anyone about this I just waled out at this point and moved me off the optision i was on and put me in the go kart hut. it was the worst summer in years in the UK and the go kart track flooded which meant i had to stay open to tell people it was closed I just spent the summer getting paid 5pounds an hour (which was a lot back then) eat ice creams and munching hot dogs. i think it was souposed to be a punishment. LOL one day I just closed my kiosk and sat on top of the hut while they had the famous Woodvale air show best fucking seats in the house :D

But to the defence of the customer there are some shitty sales assistants. I was asking about a pink ipod in HMV about a month back and the sales person just said I dont know! and went back to filing CDs. I asked her if she could check for me very politley and she made a huge HUFF/SIGH threw her boxes of CDs down and went in to the back. came back and said NO! we dont have them YOU HAPPY NOW! I went to another sales assistant who very kindley pointed them out and informed me we have plenty in stock.

Wish I had a more interesting story about retail...I started a seasonal job at Best Buy. It seems okay to me so far; you have your consumers who know what they want, those who don't know the difference between the 3 XBox bundles for example but I'm more than willing to explain the basics, and then those more irate people which I happily haven't encountered too many of. Heh, maybe it's just Canada.

Even though I haven't had my share of pricks (yet), I could probably bear it. I've also heard plenty of stories from people working in retail who want to get out, and I guess I can agree it's probably not the best career option to have if you want a little more out of life. Fortunately for me I don't have an ounce of ambition, so retail might be just right for me. Even better if I didn't have to 'sell' PSP/PRP/extended warranty dealies.

For the few weeks I've worked, it's not too stimulating when the majority of the questions received consist of whether we have the Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit/balance board, Rock Band or Guitar Hero in stock. Even when the day starts to pick up and I get 'pressure' from having to take care of multiple customers + answer the phone, everything still feels a little routine.

It definitely helps to have cool co-workers and sups. Not only does it make the environment more tolerable, but you can easily pass questions off each other if you don't know jack shit about one thing...

A long time ago, I worked at a big retail store for one November. It still remains the worst job I have ever had.

I was subjected to a racist as hell security guard, a lazy supervisor who was pretty much EXACTLY like Randall from clerk's, annoying customers, a psychotic manager, and one of the worst black fridays ever complete with customers getting into fights.

Looking back on it, that Black Friday was kinda cool though. My store had the idea to have this gigantic bin of bargain dvds in the middle of the dvd isle that customers had to sift through. My job was to fill up this bin of dvds at various times of the day. It really seemed like such a cool idea until the crowds came in. Very quickly, the huge space we left around the bin turned into a huge crowd pressed very close together trying to get to the bin or trying to get the hell out with their prizes.

After the first 40 min, this crowd was very pissed off and got very crazy. Guys were jumping into the bin itself just to look for dvds. One guy punched another guy for the last collector's edition of Fight Club. A lot of shoving matches of various intensity too. One big Rosie O' Donnel type got into it with a petite white chick in her lower 20's. Rosie actually shoved tiny so hard into a shelf that she came close to knocking it over. The petite chick fell on her butt covering her head from the rain of dvd box sets from the fallen shelf. Another chick somehow fell under the crowd when she was shoved off her feet. Lots of screaming later, she got out with just a couple bruises.

Yeah I never got close to that bin. The crowd picked my cart clean before I got within a couple meters.

My biggest retail complain of late:
People who think they are special and abuse "handicapped" parking privileges.

When I see a perfectly able-bodied person "jump" out of their car after parking in a handicapped spot right next to the main entrance of the grocery store or shopping center, I often "cough" LAZY!
More than a few times I've turned heads and clearly made an impression on the "handicapped" person.

Word.

@someone else:
I've seen those sarcastic types, there's one who works as firedog where I'm at who I'd say is abrasive. Another one is a supervisor who I wouldn't mind taking a bat to. I don't really want to become one of them.

@kyper:
Yeah it helps to have cool co-workers. It's pretty slow during the day where I work so we can joke around and kick it as long as a supervisor doesn't decide to be an ass.

Well, all you can do is give it your best, which you are doing.

And it takes a certain person to really make it in sales and retail, so don't beat yourself up. I'm not it, and I'm glad I'm not! I don't know what I'm going to do for my next job, but retail is out of the picture for me-I've had enough.

I sympathize with the OP, many people want something but have no idea what they're purchasing/what is involved with obtaining what they want. I have to go to to those idiots houses and install their cable, phone, and internet, even though they have no idea how to work a computer or television remote.

While i can imagine it's a pain helping people purchase electronics, It's a lot worse when you're in somebody's home, and after showing them no more than the power and channel buttons, you're bombarded with an instant "I HAVE TO PRESS ALL THOSE F)*@IN BUTTONS TO WATCH TV???" (true story)

or "The internet is wireless, right?"
or "what channels did I order"
or "they told me you'd have a power cord for my [4 year old dell] laptop!"
or "Ok sir, you're online" (confused look from customer) "where are my stocks? With AOL, there's a button for my stocks, where is that with (insert major ISP here)"

Dude you longboard? I used to longboard a bit. Got a fibreflex pintail with 180mm randalls and some slalom wheels, maybe they're avalons or something. It's currently being used as a shoe rack.

That's a really nice rig you've got, especially for an everyday cruiser.

I've been riding skateboards/longboards for well over 10 years. I've got a pretty big collection of boards although they're collecting dust for the winter. When I do have time to ride i usually go on distance skates, but when i get the chance i love heading to the hills for some slalom/sliding/downhill runs. It's hard to say what's more obnoxious, my quiver of 8-10 complete longboards or my collection of 2d games, old systems, and arcade sticks. People who come to my apartment for the first time must think I'm freaking crazy, you see the longboards as soon as you walk in, then you turn the corner and see two tv's, one of which is tate, and a tate VGA monitor.

Nice man. I guess I longboarded for the last 9 years but it was very casual. I had a drop carve at first with gumballs, now that was really nice, but got rid of it (dumb move) because I thought I was through boarding. Then later I got the fibreflex. Longboards get pretty pricey so I just stuck with 1 board at a time ;), never started a quiver. I do have a popsicle set up with 66mm zigzags for campus cruising. But yeah, before I'd cruise with some friends, but now that we have things to do (work, school, etc), I don't really have anyone to cruise with  . We did some downhilling but nothing crazy steep that required gloves and what not. Truthfully downhilling scares the the shit out of me but it's fun.

Ha, I guess if you walked into my house it'd be sort of similar but less hardcore, there'd be 1 longboard with several pairs of shoes on top of it and under it, and the tated tv is in my room.

I bet you post on silverfish?

Although I haven't worked in retail for a good while now, when I was at CEX central London, I had the time of my life.

That was when we were selling import games and I started my collection serious. Some people who remember the shop at those times will not have fond memories of the service, but we were just kids having a great time.

Another on this forum who worked with me back then will probably be able to vouch for the amount of fun getting drunk, buying in super rare Japanese software, and blasting music was. Retail was all good back then.

I was in GAME the other week, got absolutely mobbed by sales assistants. They outnumbered customers 3:1, still waiting to find COD5 for £19.99!

I used to work at Circuit City.

During the Xbox360 launch.

We were sold out by 10:00am and people kept asking me if we had any. I said "No, we don't unfortunately." I think the launch happened close to Black Friday as well. It was hell.

I also worked at a Dell tech support center as well. You think working at retail is bad? Try dealing with customers who have broken out-of-date laptops with expired warranties! Also dealing with any customer who doesn't know how to use a computer. Over the phone. (Seriously, if you have a five-year old box running on Windows 2K and are on dial-up, get with the 21st century and UPDATE!!! ARRGHH!!!)
Yeah, I just lost my faith in humanity.......

Seriously, is there something about computers that makes people lose all their IQ points when it breaks? Somehow, the combination of a busted computer and calling tech support causes the radiation of stupid rays or something, because sometimes I get IT GUYS who suddenly become retards over the phone.

How hard is it to learn how to use and maintain a computer? Seriously, there should be an elementary class dedicated to computer training.

An Asian dude........ skateboarding.......? You are a disgrace to your family! How dare you entertain yourself with such barbaric pasttimes when you should be driving your BMW for fun instead like a proper Chinese boy!

Actually I have two old-school boards myself, though I am not very good at it, I basically can't skate on anything other than smooth, level asphalt. I keep one in the trunk of my BMW (har har) for the summer months when I drive to school and I use it to get across the undergrad parking lot quickly, and I have a little 23" for the bus days (also WTF, taking the bus instead of driving the BMW like a proper Chinese boy)

My cousin goes to people's house to fix their PCs and shit and this guy's computer wouldn't turn on no matter how many times he pressed the "ON" button. If you guessed, then BINGO for you. The guy's computer got disconnected somehow.

Dumbass got charged $50.
