Let's list all 2d puzzle platformers (any system)

Post by indstr »

I've been fairly addicted to puzzle platformers lately, and I'd like to find more. I've gone through lists and forums of peoples' favourite 2d platformers, but I'd like to compile a list of ones that are puzzle oriented, since they are a lot less common and I have been enjoying them more lately

I am probably having a huge brain-block, but here are the only ones I can think of right now:

Klonoa Series
Donkey kong for GB / Mario Vs Donkey Kong series
Solomon's key series
Oddworld series (I don't really consider these platformers because of the controls, but I'm sure someone here will post it if I don't)

Gimme some more!! Stuff similar to Mario vs Donkey kong, in particular, would be brilliant.
If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

Holy crap! I'm glad I made this thread. Looked this up on Wikipedia. Never heard of it, but it looks awesome. SNES games from 1997-1999? Sign me up!

Would the Bubble Bobble/New Zealand Adventure/Don Doko Don/Saboten Bombers-type stuff count, or is that a different sort of game than what you're looking for?

I've never really been able to get into those type of games, but go ahead and list them anyway. I hope I will be able to eventually break into that kind of stuff, I think it just has to do with coming to an appreciation of the simplicity

My girlfriend played "nightmare in the dark" onetime and had a super great time, and it's apparently very similar to bubble bobble

Single screen platformers are a breed of their own. Definitely more action oriented than puzzle (at least the ones I'm thinking of; bubble bobble and the like).

In that vein there's also Rodland.

More in line with what the indstr is asking would be Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, I think. Very puzzle-oriented.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Moai-kun to the single-screen stuff; Lemmings and Humans to the single-screen-except-too-large-to-fit-on-it variety.

Mischief Makers has a lot of puzzle elements, but it likely won't suffice.

Actually I have already played those and they are quite interesting. Indie games are welcome!

Not sure if they're "puzzle", but Cybernator and Front Mission - Gun Hazard aren't exactly typical 2D platformers. Front Mission GH takes the goodness of Cybernator and tosses some RPG elements in. They're kinda like a weird cross between "pure" platforming and run-'n-guns.

PP Hammer (C64/Amiga)/Mickey Mouse IV (GB)/Real Ghostbusters (GB)/Garfield Labyrnith (GB) - has a lode runner-ish digging element and keys needed to open doors. The GB games are conversions (Real Ghostbusters, Garfield Labyrinth, and Mickey Mouse IV are the same game with different main character graphics) with altered graphics and music, but they share levels and gameplay with PP Hammer.

The Bugs Bunny crazy castle games lack jumping, so I don't know if they would count as platformers. That's also why I didn't mention Lode Runner, though it definitely has the puzzle thing down.

Do you want a *REAL* Platform/puzzle game?

Get Castle Excellent for MSX. It's not the kind of platform games you guys are listing... but it's one of the most brilliant, utterly awesome games ever made in any system.

It has the most devilish puzzles ever devised by man, an amazingly well designed game, with some good platform sections to boot (even though the game is pretty slow, to give you precision when moving and jumping).

That's one of the very few games I usually say every person in the world should play. The graphics are horrible, the music is annoying as hell, but give it 20 minutes, and you won't stop playing it for hours. You'll probably spend a very very long time to finish the game :)

Really, if you never played, just grab an MSX emulator and go play it. This game deserves to be known by anyone who has the slightest interest in videogames.

Troddlers for the Amiga/Snes. It came out in the wake of Lemmings-fever.

Sorry, as much as I like MSX games, Castle Excellent is just sad.

Some of my favourites have been mentioned, but here's my list anyway:

- Don Doko Don (somehow I prefer the famicom version over the arcade and pce)
- Sutte Hakkun
- Moai kun (this has some awesome music :) )
- Raccoon Rascal

I don't know, there's a lot of stuff in here that I wouldn't classify as either a platformer or a puzzle game. I think BrianC raised a good point in that you should be able to jump in a platformer (thereby excluding stuff like Lode Runner and Pitman).

I guess puzzle platformers are really something of a rare breed.

That is a pretty strong recommendation. I'll definitely have to try it out! Doesn't look sad to me, but I also love Athletic Land on MSX :D

Sutte Hakkun -- I tried it out last night and I LOVE it, although I'm already stuck on a level. Good thing it has a level select feature. I can see myself spending a lot of time with this game. Great recommend :D

Your definition of platformers is fucked up

I have fond memories of Alundra though ... it's the 1st PSX game I ever tried to back up, when I had access to a 2x CD burner at work in 1997, and didn't know about PSX copy protection. I copied it for my friend and we couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work on his PSX :D

It doesn't have jumping, so it might not count, but A Boy in His Blob for NES, a game where you feed jellybeans to a blob in order to get past areas, definitely has the puzzle part down pat. There was also a sequel of sorts on GB, Rescue of Princess Blobette.

When I heard it had challenging puzzles, I didn't expect them to be that challenging. I really did not enjoy those puzzles. Alundra raped me big time. I got stuck somewhere in the second dream I think. After that crazy ice block puzzle. Looking back on it, I don't think my brain was intelligent enough at my age to figure them out on my own.
