Non-clicky stick for PS2?

Post by fsckyle »

I hope this isn't heretical, but I'm looking for a non-clicky arcade stick for PS2 - preferably with concave buttons. It would primarily be used for shmups and misc. arcade games.

I've owned a Hori stick in the past and sold it because the clicking drove me mad. My favorite stick that I've used was an old Saturn Virtua Stick. These are cheap on eBay, but apparently there's not a Saturn to PS2 adapter.

Hopefully this isn't too hard of a request to fill. Thanks in advance.

ROFL

I already spent a good wad of cash on a pair of new Saturn pads for PC, plus the USB adapters. They're delightful.

Maybe it's a tactile issue? I logged a few hundred hours on a Galaga cabinet back in college and the controller never felt like it was grinding on me. Same with the Street Fighter stick, etc. It may also be a regional issue since I can't ever recall an arcade stick that acted like a clicky stick did.

After looking at a few more pictures I think I have a beef with the "lollipop" style stick. For reference, see the the image in the header versus the stick below it:

And yeah, apparently at least the American Street Fighter sticks weren't lollipops either:

The Happ Perfect 360 and Sanwa Flash don't click at all. They're optically activated.

I recall the Ascii sticks for Dreamcast are virtually identical to the Flash, so won't click.

Anything microswitched will click, even if just slightly. Usually stuff with crap (cheap) switches.

Galaga is leaf switched 2-way, so it doesn't click and has a smoother action when activating.

So really, you're after a leaf or optical switched joystick. I'm 99% certain you're not going to find one of those in a PS2 format, so you'll need to do some modding.

Lollipop (ball) or bat top is personal preference.

Thank you so much for the reply. After further reading I do think I need a Happ stick.

I have a couple of prospects that fit the bill. Any thoughts on these?

I wasn't clear enough

Cheap switches tend to click/rattle more than quality ones.
