I agree with the subject of this thread.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned the Akira remake (produced by Leonardo DeCaprio)...

my friend sent me a link saying that the remake isn't based on the movie, but the manga that it spawned from. he also said that the manga isn't as over the top and is actually quite a bit different in terms of plot and pacing. this will still probably suck, but who knows.
oh, and apparently leonardo dicaprio wants to do a ninja scroll live action remake as well. but he doesn't want to star in that at least. in akira he is going to play either kaneda or tetsuo, i forget which.

No doubt in this version he sets out to track down his captore using the advanced performance and comfort of Nike trainers and the refreshing taste of CocaCola.brokenhalo wrote:my friend sent me a link saying that the remake isn't based on the movie.....

Subject should be 'There is no reason for this'.
God bless Hollywood, remaking films by those crazy little Koreans, for the good of the world. It's like they're saying "well, good idea, but we'll make a proper one for you!" in a patronising manner.
A thoroughly modern film, well acted, well shot, there's absolutely no reason to remake it whatsoever.

it's actually surprising to me, as korea has very strict rules for their movie industry. korean government on the whole is quite anti-holywoodbloodflowers wrote:Subject should be 'There is no reason for this'.

I've seen fanfics that crap all over Hollywood's recent output. Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
Interestingly, ever since the release of Shiri a decade or so back, the South Korean Government has been backing the domestic film industry as a method of increasing cultural capital across the world. It seems before the huge government cash injections that spawned films such as The Host and Lady Vengence, the South Korean film industry was regarded as little more than a joke. Now, after roughly ten years and a shit load of money, it's one of the most respected cinemas in the world. It's facinating stuff. I was talking to a Korean guy a while back, and he said that when Shiri came out, everyone was surprised and proud that South Korea could come up with something that could compete directly against Hollywoodjpj wrote:it's actually surprising to me, as korea has very strict rules for their movie industry. korean government on the whole is quite anti-holywoodbloodflowers wrote:Subject should be 'There is no reason for this'.

I read that too but the problem is that it's guaranteed that they didn't read the comic first. I doubt Stephen Speilberg was sitting at home, reading manga thinking "This would make a great movie". They probably watched the movie, thought "This would be a good candidate for a remake" and are now going back to the source material to inform their version of the story. I think they went out of their way to say it's based on the manga, not the movie as a way of differentiating their remake from all of the other shitty remakes of good foreign movies. Thinking about it now, I think I've only seen one competent American remake of a foreign film, that being Traffic.brokenhalo wrote:my friend sent me a link saying that the remake isn't based on the movie, but the manga that it spawned from. he also said that the manga isn't as over the top and is actually quite a bit different in terms of plot and pacing. this will still probably suck, but who knows.
