Left 4 Dead pls?

Post by Ed Oscuro »

I just activated my key, I'm sure some of ya are gonna be getting this game.

Released on the 10th anniversary of HL1, by the way. I've read there are twenty maps (only?) so I'm not sure how long the level-based gameplay will last, but I decided to spring for it anyway. Shameful that they didn't let any review sites push out reviews before release, but the demo sold me more or less. FO3 probably would last me longer but would also tax my system.

AGH only 24% done (it started at 5% with the demo installed), WE MUST MOVE LITTLE PROGRESS INDICATOR!

One of my boys in Europe has had the thing since midnight, I'm pretty jealous. It's now 6 PM and he's still playing through the commentary mode :O

Unfortunately, by the time I get around to getting an X360, I will have nobody to play with. I'm not a fan of co-op play, but from the videos and reviews, this looks like its gonna be lots of fun. I always wanted to be in a zombie movie.
Anyways, doesn't anyone think 4 scenarios is a little sparse? I was hoping for a few more scenarios to play through or at least something more like randomly generated levels.

Randomly generated levels?

On the performance side...it doesn't seem too heavy to me, and the demo selected very high settings as default. Hitting Tab (actually \ for me but who's counting) caused the demo to hiccup, but I also had Firefox using like 1/2 my computer's RAM at the time. Running on a GeForce 8800 640MB @ 1600x1200 didn't feel too different from Day of Defeat Source or CSS (not to mention the use of HL2 placeholder graphics here and there, heh) - game was nice and responsive all the time.

The timing of spawns and the incidence of waves of enemies and boss characters is as close as you get to randomness in this game (aside from the usual randomized weapon physics), and that's somewhat tied to performance. Plus the end-of-level stats make this like an old-fashions arcade shmup game, rite.

43%.

Some update:

A friend of mine reports he's played 4.7 hours and is about halfway through the LAST episode, playing online with good players. As suspected, not the longest-lasting game, but he says it's great fun regardless.

Love Left 4 Dead. Got it when it released at midnight. The regular co-op experience is VERY replayable because of the Director (alters weapons, zombie mobs, bosses, music, visual effects, character dialogue, etc., based on a huge variety of factors concerning how your team is playing and acting). For even more replayability, there's versus mode which lets players control the special zombie bosses trying to kill the human-controlled survivors. There is nothing like setting up a perfect coordinated zombie attack and watching the survivors get separated and destroyed.

Basically, the name of the game is cooperation. It forces you to cooperate to survive and win.

I've been playing the demo on 360 when I have enough friends online. This game is outright boring by yourself. It's too hard to put on Expert setting and it's a bore with no one to shout at or hear shouting through your mic. Get three friends in there though, and it's awesome. I will note, it's not the same with strangers though; you have to know the people you're playing with for maximum entertainment. On Expert you constantly feel like you're on the edge of death. Hitting your team mates by accident is absolutely devastating on this difficulty and happens often. We played for over two hours the other night and couldn't make it to the saferoom on the subway stage, and I've heard that that scenario is cut in half for the demo.

So if you're playing on Expert, I think the length of the game should increase significantly. Even still, the content does seem a bit sparse, but for PC players it shouldn't be a problem considering the mod community. I'm more hesitant to pick it up for 360 because the co-op is really all that interests me. Great game none the less.

Yep, the Subway level is cut in half for the demo.

Game says I've been at it 6.8 hours in the full game (2.3 for the demo) - hmm, it indeed is pretty short, and I've made it through all parts on Normal (lol) offline. We'll wait to see what the mod community comes up with; right now I'm just kinda burned out on it so I'll install Bioshock (which I bought on the same trip to the store).

Random note: I've been playing most of the campaigns mostly with the pistols only, and on the fourth and last campaign I played, Dead Air, I was sure to get the Achievement - but turns out I didn't get any, not even the normal "yay you beat the campaign" Achivement, which is fucked up. Enemies were rushing me, but I think it's the fault of having gone through commentary mode immediately before (also, commentary mode wouldn't let me play No Mercy's finale, which I was expecting it'd let me do from what was said).

Forests still look like HL2 forests, I'm afraid.

For the pistols only achievement, you can't use pipe bombs or molotovs either, and I'm guessing also the gun turret is off limits. Just FYI
