Crap, now where am I gonna get all my questionable content from?
When did this happen? I stop using the newsgroups for 3 months and here goes att deciding to "protect" their users. Shit, they could have at least warned a nigga. Damn.  No amount of evil smileys can convey my furious anger.

I use http://www.news.astraweb.com/
They have nice pay-by-download subscriptions that I use all the time.

Fuck pay by download. Unlimited is the way to go

Scurred, once you get premium newsgroup access, you will forget about your ISP's... What do they get, a couple days retention? 10 max? Premium services are up to over 100 days now. It's ridiculous :D

I use http://www.newshosting.com/ and split the cost of unlimited with my friend, so it's only $7.50 a month each for us. But it looks like Michaelm's astraweb there has a $10/mo unlimited plan.

Trust me, it is worth it

If you go this route just be sure you join private trackers and not TPB or ISOhunt or whatever else is public.

Secondly, i'm going to throw up giganews into the mix. Great usenet.

Yeah, torrents if you don't mind waiting forever, and crippling your internet connection so that your girlfriend can't watch shit on youtube while you are downloading,

I assume you use windows XP? If so its probably because windows by default only allows like 10 active connections. The good sites are very quick.

Sometimes it's a router limitation. In addition to devices that are actually advertised as routers, many cable and DSL modems also act as routers, and if they're overwhelmed with connections it can really mess things up. Your connection can also get choked if your upstream usage cap is not set appropriately; it should be at least 10% below what your connection is actually capable of, or else downloading can be impaired (because your system must still send acknowledgments to the server).

Also, the "10 connection limit" in XP is often misunderstood. It is not a limit of 10 connections total, but rather 10 "half-open" connections. Once a connection is actually established, it's not subject to the limit. This can still cause a few performance problems, but it doesn't really limit the total number of peers you can connect to nor your download speed once they are connected.

I can´t believe I´ve been on the internet for all these years and never looked up what Usenet actually is until now.

Don't feel bad. It was uselessly slow on 56k.

Hell, I started FTP downloading in 1990 and I've barely messed with newsgroups in all this time. These kids' lifetimes and more. It was probably better than BBSing over 9.6k anyway. Fat pipe to the rural institute.

True. I've only experienced issues (other nodes connected to my network) with our migration to Verizon Fios. The actiontec's NAT tables get overwhelmed due to being tiny. Everyone else has connection issues mine is fine.

Before that though, i had my upload at 30-50% of my overall download and when I continued to add more torrents into my program I would notice halts to my connection. This was even after days of no activity to any of the torrents.

I've never had experience with modems as routers, but i would think the majority of people are probably connecting behind Netgear or Linksys routers which have reasonable NAT tables, so the best bet to bogged browsing could be the default connection limit.

When i was on cable, anyone who starting leeching off me wouldnt really affect my browsing the web but at times did hurt.

As for the 10 connection thing, i had a huge issue with that when i would have a lot of connections open; When i switched the default limit 10, 100, 1000 torrents no longer affected me.
