I dunno, anyone remember that whole Andrew Stimpson situation?
Whatever happened to dude? I think this is either a hoax or a serious rush to judgement by people who should know better. What do you guys think/

This cure must be withheld and/or discredited, or else people might start thinking it's okay to have sex.

It's not a hoax. However, this treatment is very risky and biologically costly (it's a fucking bone marrow transfusion) and isn't viable for a large-scale delivery. Also, symptoms gone != virus not present.

HIV is constantly mutating; there is already a strain that uses CXCR4 receptors instead of CCR5 receptors (which this story is about) to infect cells. Still, it's a start, and gene-therapy sounds like a promising way to "disable" the receptors HIV uses.

What kind of baby is afraid of a bone marrow transfusion?

It is a chance worth taking. Just not something you'd deliver to thousands of patients at a time (can you even find that many blood marrow donors who are immune to that strain of HIV?)

not an "op". "CSF" isn't just for cerebrospinal fluid anymore. These things'll be done with blood. If they're scaled up and cloned, especially.

Also, being a loner is grate when temporarily immunosuppressed. Take it, endure it, allow it.

I thought everyone knew by now that HIV was a hoax.

I would not go that far, but I remember watching a documentary about people living with AIDS who were refusing to take the medications but living just fine so they said. Then again this was about 10 years or so ago so who knows what condition they're in.

By now, rotting in their graves, undoubtedly. Without treatment the median survival rate after the diagnosis of AIDS ranges between 6 and 19 months.

I was just joking though I remember reading awhile back about people who had AIDS but not HIV. If HIV causes AIDS, how is that possible?

Maybe they were living with HIV but not AIDS? That is possible.

There are other immune system disorders besides AIDS; sometimes they are misdiagnosed or otherwise misrepresented as being AIDS.

to receive the transplant they just inject someone else's cells into your blood. it's just that your cells have to be wiped out first by radiation or chemo.

it's the donor that gets a needle in his bones.

If I were one of these people with the AIDS proof mutation I would be real quiet about it.

your paranoia about something time-consuming (and incapacitating for the recipient) calls to mind the sex change at knifepoint in "Desperate Living"

or did you have something more "Handmaid's Tale" or "Children Of Men" in mind? Just an envy-killing you're afraid of? A different gift?

where did you get this idea? look up "colony-stimulating factor". Granted, the recipient might have a small amount of marrow withdrawn for testing.

this is what I was thinking of, but it turned out to be false:
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/kidney.asp
but then I came across this:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/ ... 4713.shtml

I am an organ donor. But my organs are just like anyone's. People with the mutation might be rare.

Tumor board.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... quote]Bone marrow is taken from the donor in the operating room while the donor is unconscious and pain-free (under general anesthesia). Some of the donor's bone marrow is removed from the top of the hip bone. The bone marrow is filtered and treated. It can be transplanted immediately or frozen and stored for later use.

Even if there was a cure, I really don't believe it will ever be released. The medical industry makes an amazing amount of money pumping HIV prolonging drugs in to patients. It is a sad fact, but the truth.

Agreed. I doubt a cure for the big money makers would ever make it.
