Arcade vs Homeplay
Arcade vs Homeplay
Where do you seem to get a better score?
ps homeplay includes not just ports onto consoles but superguns too
if you own a full cab then i would class this as arcade

Well neither do I have an arcade around nor do I own a cab, so I guess I have to choose "homeplay".
Whenever I had the chance to play in the arcades, I was more eager to survive though. And in some crowded jpn arcade where guys are watching you, I feel a high ambition to show off some impressive skills
YEAH I LIKE IT WHEN PEOPLE WATCH ME
So I'd say playing in a real arcade is kind of a kick in the ass to go on your limit. But that includes playing on a console in front of some friends too, so I would state that getting a higher score does not depend on arcade/home but on the surrounding.

Re: Arcade vs Homeplay
a better question for me would be "when". i only like playing games in the dead of nightmr_m0nks wrote:Where do you seem to get a better score?

i would also say that playing at home on a cab still qualifies as home play. arcade, to me, would mean in public - which i think is harder (but more satisfying). hope that makes sense...

Sadly going to play games in arcades is no longer a reality for most people. They're dead.

My scores are better at home wether I'm playing with a cab, or a console setup of some sort as long as it doesn't involve gamepads. However I do preffer playing at the arcade. However there's 2 problems with arcade locations; one, arcades are becoming more of a rarity now days and two, if your lucky enough to have access to an arcade place, then you must prepare yourself for poor QA.
It's a strange thing this passion for the arcade I tell you.

Do you not think an arcade could be a better environment to play an arcade game?PROMETHEUS wrote:There is no reason why your score would be lower at home than in an arcade. It could be higher though due to optimal conditions, since you can choose what you're playing with.
i dont think so, its just a case of wanting to experience the game in the environment it was designed forelectricgrave wrote: It's a strange thing this passion for the arcade I tell you.
Like film fans who go to the cinema
or music fans who go to gigs/concerts
Im not saying arcades are a perfect environment for gaming (many far from it) i just think that their is something special about playing a game on a big cab in a room full of big cabs. hopefully with a few like minded people, maybe this environment give players an edge

Unless you don't have enough money or space at home to create good conditions, definitely not. At home it's more quiet, you can play again and again without having to wait behind someone or leave your seat to someone else, watch videos between two runs, play with your favorite controller, use mame for savestates... The only thing you're losing is the possibility to watch better players play and the added motivation that is generated by seeing a lot of other people interested in the same games as you are, which you don't necessarily get in an arcade.mr_m0nks wrote:Do you not think an arcade could be a better environment to play an arcade game?PROMETHEUS wrote:There is no reason why your score would be lower at home than in an arcade. I don't even LIKE arcades. I visit and spectate, but I'd never opt for them over entertainment at home. Oh and the Japanese arcades? Yeah, people overrate them when the majority of them are fucking dead holes. Noisy, smelly, unsafe coves filled with random strangers who've had their greasy hands on the stick you're about to play. Ew, gross.
playing the PCB at home is home-play too.Bullet wrote:Well an arcade game properly played on arcade get the proper characteristics which can never be replicated 1to1 (as far as I know) on home ports. Im talking slow-downs here.
different hardware, different strengths/weaknesses, different slowdown.Bullet wrote:Does anyone know what exactly causes the slow-downs and why everybody says they cannot be replicated in ports?
unless the hardware the port runs on is sufficiently more powerful to run everything the PCB runs at full speed at full speed, and the programmers took the extra effort to program emulation of the arcade hardware slowdown. which is typically not cost-efficient if the result is lost on 90+ % of the players anyway. unfortunately.
bombs save lives
Maybe I'm lucky in the fact I have a reasonably well equipped (for shmups in the uk) arcade to go to. Casino Arcade.
However its far from a palace, its in a dingy basement full of midgys next to the church of scientology and it often has a weird smell. (plus the odd hobo wandering in)
But every friday i do a round trip of over 2 hours across London on one of the most dangerous bus routes in the country just to get my mits on Progear in a nice big cab (Its not even that well set up, there are a good 10-15 pixels worth of screen missing on the left). most weeks there are at least 1 or 2 other members of the forum there (me and spadgy mostly) and we talk crap while we play. it fun, its social and it gets me out of the house. what more could you want.
I don't care how good your set up is at home. There is something special about playing in an arcade.
Same as watching a film in a Cinema

Perhaps you missunderstood or I wasn't clear enough, but for you not to realize that this is quite a strange hobby you must be absolutely mad. The passion we all share for the arcade is strange given that many of us go to many different lenghts to get our fix on the arcade passion.mr_m0nks wrote:i dont think so, its just a case of wanting to experience the game in the environment it was designed forelectricgrave wrote: It's a strange thing this passion for the arcade I tell you.
Some of us have one or many cabs, others have many ports and others have PC set ups that allowes them to play the games and let's not even talk about the PCB's. The arcade gaming as a hobby and as a whole is quite strange, 'cause unlike any other type of game, the most miniscule detail can ruin the whole game.
Arcade gamers are hard to please and to top it all are very much extremist of some sort, at least I know I am.
