most pretty bullets/patterns?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Which game do you feel has the most artistic bullet patterns? I'm not talking just bullet spam but what patterns are really pretty and artistic?
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

As far as artistic, I'd say Ketsui. The bullet patterns on the stage 5 midboss are amazing.

Your question if applied to the classic early 1990's era of arcade shmup PCBs, I'd have to say Capcom's CPS1 powered Three Wonders with it's beautiful and lavishly done hand-drawn sprites. You don't see such exquiste sprite work like that being done in today's arcade shmup PCB releases due to the extra amount of time and effort required to do so.

Sure, it would be nice if Cave would create a new arcade shmup PCB title with such embellished hand-drawn sprites as a tribute to like how it was back in the mid 1990's with their DP, DDP, ESPrade, Dangun Feveron/SOS, Guwange & Progear No Arashi PCB releases. But resorting to using such time saving shortcuts as rendered sprites and such is the current reality that we must accept nowdays. ^_~

I'd have to say the cool bullet storm that one encounters on the very last end-stage boss showdown in the Taito G-Card iteration of Psyvariar Revision is a quite a sight to behold. Much better than on the various console iteration of the same name.

In before Touhou and Rage Mode.

Ah, what the hell. Touhou might not be that appreciated but after playing so much Subterranean Animism and some of the previous games... The patterns there are just a whole new history with colours, shapes, movements that sometimes can leave you quite speechless. Imperishable Night has those star patterns from Marisa. Absolutely pretty. Seeing all those stars rotating, moving, falling like a colourful storm. Damn. Jeez, thank you bloodflowers for that IN review!

Shoot the Bullet in particular has really amazing stuff going on most of the time, even in the first levels.

Samidare is an ode to fast, colourful and pretty bullet patterns. Gates and VIVIT's attack in the Extra Stage are really good.

HellSinker might not earn a prize in terms of colourful variation in the bullets but some formations are out of this world. Pretty much the entire battle with Perpetual Calendar features strange barrages (Ages Circulation, Astrolabium, Kareidoscope, Luna/Sol Ghosts and more) and the dormant "Total Karma Compressor System Named Garland" features a set of "Attractions" (12 patterns that respond to a denomination) that are beautiful to look at, especially one called "Celestial Cataract".

The True Last Boss is another kind of beast and, personally, the attacks there become too insane to qualify them as 'patterns'. They are more like "what kind of acid did Ruminant's Whimper take when he coded that part".

edit: Le Soeur Du Barrage had some nice stuff going on too, especially in the later bosses.

I'd say Ketsui, because the patterns seem almost organic. The bullets seem to be alive.

for best patterns, I'd go with ketsui. For best artistic bullets, Guwange.

Touhou by far. Sometimes I think they're more about art than actual dodging.

Any of the Psyvariar series bosses. Any of the ultra/god mode Mushi* series.

As much hate as they get around here for their gameplay failings, Touhou games definitely have the most aesthetically pleasing bullet patterns.

Chaos Field? Really? What were you thinking of, in particular? I've played it so much that I'm desensitized to any artistic value the patterns might have.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Well I, for one, think there are some nice looking patterns throughout the game. It's just a matter of opinion. Nothing else. 8)

Castle of Shikigami 3, Ikaruga, Psyvariar 2.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

All right, just played through it again and I agree. They're hard to appreciate when you're playing for score.

Seconding Castle of Shikigami III, especially stage 4.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Jesus, how could I forget Homura? Maybe it would look better if the bullets had that typical flashing effect to help telling them apart from the background... but they look damn beautiful as it is.

And Shiki III had some neat boss patterns too.

I love Skonec. :D

Shoot the Bullet, by far. If there's any artistry in bullet patterns, this is where you shoot be looking for it.

A year ago I made some screenshots from the first 2/3 of the game, here.

It's also hard as nails, although seems easy because you only restart one attack and not everything from the very beginning. If those patterns were in the actual games, that would be awesome.

>_> Satori with Reimu-B is the best thing in th11.

Other things I can think of easily:
I like the hand-bullets in Esprade, and most of the final boss' attack patterns in general.
Marisa in Imperishable Night, Nitori and Hina in Mountain of Faith, Remilia and Flandre in EoSD, and Yuyuko in Perfect Cherry Blossom.
Stage 4 in Banshiryuu (as VIVIT) and the final boss (first form) in Shuusou Gyoku. Also basically anything in Samidare.

Most StB patterns in th11 have loosened difficulty, so it's not quite the same. Besides, you can shoot/bomb, which alone makes it so much easier.
