In the US?? I checked the PC version of the store, and it's down. It would be nice if you could download, say, Ratchet and Clank games on your PS3. Especially since all the new models for sale have no PS2 BC.

If they have no PS2 backward compatibility, how would they work as downloadable games on the PS3? They'd still have to find a way to emulate the games somehow, or else they'd have to port them to the PS3 architecture which is probably a pain in the ass.

The sheer size of many PS2 games makes them unlikely candidates for download. The later games are made on DVD's. Now I'm not sure how much data a PS2 disk can hold but 1 gig = 1024 megs. I'll be willing to bet that many of the later games were at least 1 gig in size. According to a quick search most games are 3 to 4 gigs. Shmups may be smaller however due to their relative simplicity.

So lets just say that the game is a 3 gig game, this means that you will have to download (1024 megs x 3) or 3072 megabytes worth of data.

That is pretty demanding.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Entirely possible though, most disc images may be 3GB, but not the actual files.

XBLive seem to be able to do it for old XBOX games. I see no reason Sony couldn't offer something similar, they just take up quite a bit of HD space that's all

That's exactly what I was thinking.
