After Burner I: 8/10
This game it's a back-view shooter, the controls are good, the only problem in that game was the missile response was too slow, making the Lock-On a problem.
This game was only 18 stages long.
After Burner II: 10/10
The controls on After Burner II got several improvements, the Missile firing speed was fast, making the Lock-On very easy.
There's also a Speed Control, for deal obstacles in the game like jets and missiles in your back.
The number of stages increased to 18 to 23, and some stages was changed.
Graphics: 10/10
For a game of it's time, the graphics were amazing, even today is still being an impressive game
Music & Sound: 10/10
Another detail of the game is the music, the only way that i have for describe it is PERFECT, "After Burner" (Stage 4) is a classic on game music, same the sound effects, voices like "Fire!" or "The Enemy" makes you feel like you're in the middle of the battle.

- The After Burner series was inspired by the 1986 movie Top Gun, and there's some scenes of the movie in the game, for example in stage 5, when you land, you'll see Maverick on his bike following you when you take off (in stage 13, Maverick is replaced with the Ferrari car of Out Run).
- The first After Burner was released only in Japan.
- After Burner II is a playable "mini-game" hidden in the Dreamcast game Shenmue II
- The music of After Burner II is an unlockable in the game After Burner Climax, for unlock it shift the throttle to slow and press the missile button when the game first loads.
Conclusions:
The first After Burner is a nice game, but i better recommend After Burner II, Old school fan or not, you'll find this game very impressive.
