So what SHMUPS should I pick up for it? If possible, please give me a rough idea of how much each would run. Thanks!
Some of my favourites listed here, prices might not be very accurate (they do vary, after all), but should give you an idea. Happy shooting!

You can check Melf's site for a complete listing of all the shmups available. Each followed by a blurb stating whether it's worth a look or not.
But he seems to hate 'twin cobra' while I think it was well worth my $5

A little from Column A, A little From Column B.
Gleylancer is a quality Hori, not the best, but Quality nonetheless.
Battlemania 2 improves upon every aspect of the original
and Eliminate Down is simply awesome for it's genre and time period.
I'd say you should emulate and sample them for yourself before getting hard copies.

Very good and very rare. I'd say that they're worth their heavy price tags, but I do collect japanese MD games. Nonetheless, these ARE (in my opinion) the best shooters for the MD (save Battle Mania, which is a very cool game though), just make sure you like oldschool shooting, and don't expect Cave or Raizing standards. Try before you buy, as Dartagnan1083 said in the post above.jpolz wrote:Why are these so expensive? That good? Or that rare?zinger wrote:

Fire Shark is the shit, second best Toaplan game after Batsugun. Steel Empire is also quality. A nice steam punk setting, although the graphics are very brown. MUSHA is also damn fine.
I think zinger's estimation of Elemental Master's price is a bit high, unless I got a great deal without knowing it. And the first Battle Mania is called Trouble Shooter in the US and shouldn't cost more than 5 or 10 bucks.

The american version of EM is dirt-cheap, but the japanese seem to go for a bit more. Or maybe not?alpha5099 wrote:Fire Shark is the shit, second best Toaplan game after Batsugun. Steel Empire is also quality. A nice steam punk setting, although the graphics are very brown. MUSHA is also damn fine.

EDIT: another good thing about trouble shooter; we westerners get to enjoy the weird but oh-so-great-storyline. The BM games have a lot of humour going for them.
No need to spend $200+ for Gleylancer and Eliminate Down if you're not a collector.
You can spend $100 and buy the Tototek flash cart. It works with 32x games as well.

I own over 60 Genesis games and find the Tototek cart to be easier to use. No need to switch games as it holds 64 megabits worth of games. And Gleylancer and Eliminate Down are awesome games. I will have to track them down as I'm a collector too.

Yeah, Fire Shark ROCKS!! IMO, it's a shame that Flying Shark was never ported to the Genny; as good as Fire Shark turned out, Flying Shark probably would've been pretty high quality as well.alpha5099 wrote:Fire Shark is the shit, second best Toaplan game after Batsugun. And I'll second Andi; Task Force Harrier EX is an awesome Genny shmup.
BTW, what model of Genesis did this guy give you? If it's a Model 1, you should get a Power Base Converter, and also look into some of the great Master System shmups that are out there.

I have no sig whatsoever.
Call me a pirate if you will...I agree with this guy. No need to wear out the cart slot. This would be GREAT for a nomad as well. There's no need to be a pirate to use a tototek card. Here's what I'd do:
1 put in the card only roms of the games I own;
2 Buy original games on ebay;
3 Put them in my collection;
4 download the respective roms on the tototek;
5 repeat from step 2.
but in truth, I would never renounce the privilige and pleasure to insert my cartridges into the MD. So this card has little use, after all.

Aaarrghh... we be pirates then...captain ahar wrote:i was more referring to my desire to have the flash cart, despite my "no emulation" stance, as i can indeed be a hypocrite... but i'll take it.
haha we tag-teamed this beyotch.
And it's not emulation as you're putting the game code onto a physical cart and playing it on a real Genesis/Megadrive.
Here's a review. And they have flash carts for practically all of the old cart-based systems.

But on a more serious note, Tototek is a reliable company. So order away. I've ordered three times from them without a hitch: Tototek flash cart, PS2-to-Genesis adapter, and PS2-to-Saturn adapter. If you live in the US, you can use the cheaper padded envelope option and get it within a week to 10 days.
I'm don't feel so bad doing it when it's for a defunct system. Even if you did guy the cart, the company that made it wouldn't see a dime. And I'm pretty confident that 99% of the games we discuss here won't be re-released anytime soon, so there's no loss of profit there either.zinger wrote:Copying games is illegal, even if you own them. Don't know where you live zinger, but here we have right to a legitimate backup copy of the software we own.zinger wrote:Copying games is illegal, even if you own them. In other words, having a rom of a game I phisically own is not illegal. Putting that very rom onto a flash card is not illegal too.
No crime in sight. ^_^

True Turrican, but the $100 Tototek flash cart is illegal. I don't care if Sega, or whoever, is not making money off of these games anymore; the bottom line, IMO, is that they are still copyrighted.Turrican wrote:Don't know where you live zinger, but here we have right to a legitimate backup copy of the software we own.zinger wrote:Copying games is illegal, even if you own them. Huh, right, my bad, I had not considered that. But why exactly is it illegal a flash card?dave4shmups wrote:True Turrican, but the $100 Tototek flash cart is illegal. In theory it's just a non-official pheripheral: not so different from an action replay, a third party joystick, or a mod chip.
Things like mod chips have been defended in law courts because they are not illegal, the use one can do of them is, but they also allow users to play legitimate backups.
You know, I'm anti-piracy (not anti-pirate) too, but I feel like if this is the kind of crime we're worried about then we are becoming a bit thick-skulled.dave4shmups wrote:

There are real crimes out there, but this is the sort no one worries about.
This is the kind of crime that is hurting absolutely no one. Let's move on.

I hope you guys aren't going to start another tight assed illegal debate here!
For what its worth, its illegal to play Japanese games if you live in the USA, and even the use of "mod chips" are considered illegal. (mostly due to piracy, but regions are debatable too)
I own the import Metal Slug, and it clearly states on the back that it is prohibited to rent or re-sell this item. (Go figure...you tell me!?) The same with arcade PCB's. Any collectors want to chime in about the re-sale bullshit?
BTW: How many of you "law abiding people" still drive 60MPH in a 55 zone?
Own a radar detector for you're car?...do me a favor and shut up about legal shlegal mumbo jumbo please!
Hell nowadays, failing to wear a seatbelt is a crime!
Some laws are stupid! Get my point?
