I want to hold a Caravan tournament.

Post by lgb »

Enhasa says it's a good idea. Maybe I should.

9 weeks. I'll choose the game. 4 games will be PC-Engine games, 4 games will be any other games, 1 game will be Recca.

There will be two boards where necessary (2 minute & 5 minute modes and whatnot), and if so, all possible points are halved between them.

I think this could work out great.

That's all.

edit:
I apologize for my somewhat rude behavior earlier. All I have are excuses you probably don't want to hear (or maybe you do) and a recap to make it a little easier to deal with as a whole, for me and you. Let's just say I was sick.

1. This is a "Caravan" tournament, which is made up of short, generally one-stage-long games that may or may not have a time limit. There will be 5 weeks: 1 PC-Engine game, one PC-Engine CD game, one arcade game, one PC game, and Summer Carnival '92 - Recca for the Famicom.

2. There is no voting or voting weeks involved, only playing weeks. The games chosen for each week is random to me but probably not for you, both in game chosen and method of choosing.

3. A week will begin at some point on a Monday and will end at some point on a Sunday. The weeks are non-stop, there will be no breaks except the hours between a playing week's end and beginning.

4. The point system is simple: 100 / how many people have entered and submitted a score. Sometimes in a week, there will be two different competitions in one, this is more often the case with PC-Engine and PC-Engine as they usually have two such "Caravan" modes; Hudson's Soldier series have a 2 minute mode and 5 minute mode, and the Naxat (and their partners in play)-hosted "Summer Carnival" games usually have a 2 minute long "Score Attack" mode (same as any 2 minute mode in a Soldier game) and 5 minute long "Time Attack" mode (you have 5 minutes to get a certain score that is different for each game; for weeks with such competitions, you would submit a time instead of a score). In such cases, the "100 / how many people enter and post a score" will become "50 / how many people (...)"; you'd have to enter both boards to try for a normal full week's worth.

Now, this would be that temporary list again:

Corrections? Comments? I still think this could work out alright.

So in other words, we need to play and score high on BOTH the 2 minute mode AND the 5 minute mode to get a high place in the overall tourney leaderboards?

Precisely. It's not for every week, though.

Simple explanation: Let's say you get 100 possible points for coming in first, with one board. If there are two boards instead of one, coming in first on both of the boards gets you 50 points each, for a total of 100.

With that kind of setup, it discourages trying to do well in both. You'd be better off putting all your focus into getting one mode down pat.

Perhaps make it 25% penalty per score if you play both modes, rather than 50%?

What Arvandor said...the penalty doesn't make sense as it's set up now.

Sorry. Get first in one board, but refuse to participate in the second, and you get 50. Get first in in both, and you get 100.

With 9 weeks, it sounds like you have the whole thing planned out already. With all these games, I'd hope there will be some Harmful Park. :P

I don't know if I would participate but I think this kind of tournament is much more interesting than something like STGT, because STGT often uses long games where all that's going to make a difference is how much of it you'll accept to spend time memorizing within a week. With Caravan games, screw one-week memorization rushes and let skill take place and make more difference.

It's still memorization. Caravans aren't as difficult because it's less to memorize and execute.

Most if not all time/score attack modes are based around the same principles of quick destruction and memorisation of key scoring points and techniques. Lunaria, Feveron, Recca, Pink Sweets etc all follow these basic principles - the only difference being that in a score/time attack mode, if you want to get the best score you have to learn the entire stage back to front, while you can be more free in a full game and pick and choose to incorporate major scoring points into your game, as there is more to choose from.

Nothing made this more clear to me than learning Feveron TT with C-Bomb-4.

tl:dr.
what SiK said.

yeah of course it will still involve memorization, what I'm saying is it's quicker to memorize so you can quickly finish memorizing the game within a few days and then practice what's interesting : hard parts that take skill. So you're spending more time doing more interesting stuff, I think. I also don't think it's necessarily easier, you can make a short game with extremely difficult challenges one after the other, unlike something like Dodonpachi which is very long and only has hard challenges few and far between.

I chose caravans because I find a caravan a week to make much more sense than a full game a week.

Oh, and I'm using sikraiken's definition.

For lgb,

Are you using a real PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 console setup with a good PCE arcade stick to place well in your proposed upcoming Caravan contest?

I'd recommend such a Hori Fighting Stick PC for best results...with other PCE arcade sticks, your milage may vary. Of course, a reverse Duo to PCE/TG-16 controller adapter would be needed for it to work properly on the classic PCE console (due to different controller DIN pinout layout). ^_~

This seems kind of relevant, 536465 point score attack in Recca, not a lot to improve.

Can't you at least wait until after STGT? :D

Yeah, I would wait until a couple of weeks after STGT, or else your entrants and participation rate will be lower than it could be.

Fine. It might wind up being less, but fine. I'll try for a week or two after STGT.
