Anyone elses Xbox freezing?
This isn't a hardware question, but after mondays live update is anyone elses console freezing when they play games? My consoles 9 days old so I'm dam sure microsoft are responsible. No glitching or overheating just plain freezing either online, offline or in a game after a few mins.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but don't write off hardware failure just yet. Normally 360's will start like this and before you know it, you've got the red rings of death.

Yeah, well, they haven't. My Japanese 360, which I thought was immortal and was an exception to the rule, died recently. It didn't RRoD, but the GPU died and I couldn't get a picture. Games would still play and sound was still heard, though. Since it didn't RRoD it wasn't under warranty and I had to pay for it to be repaired. Two weeks later and I'm still waiting.brokenhalo wrote:that sucks hard. might as well call microsoft for your coffin now or take it back to where you bought it and exchange it. you would think they'd have this stuff ironed out by now....
I'm sorry, I'm not really into the whole trend of ripping repair guys off. I mean.. I want the console repaired, it doesn't have the RRoD, and I most certainly don't want to damage my console further. It might be free to fix if it had it, but this is pretty much my only option.Etrian wrote:Ah.. so you didn't end up forcing the RRoD like most people. You could've saved your dough that way.Elixir wrote:Since it didn't RRoD it wasn't under warranty and I had to pay for it to be repaired. Two weeks later and I'm still waiting.
Btw, it was $105 for the repair. Still beats importing one again though.
Same here. I have a few games already for when I finally get one. Hopefully, the Jasper (with a 65nm GPU to match the CPU size) will come out any day now and will solve all the 360's problems. If not, then it'll likely be a long wait to the integrated Valhalla but I'm in no rush as long as I get nice hardware that I won't have to constantly return.
This shouldn't be a reason for anyone not to buy the system. Microsoft are extremely efficient in replacements, which are done speedily and free of charge.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I'm sorry dude.![]()
This is the primary reason why I won't buy the system even though you can get some cool shmups from the arcade.
There are lots of good reasons to own a 360 right now.

Unless you are trying to get a Japanese 360 fixed by Microsoft in Europe, in which case you are screwed.Skykid wrote:This shouldn't be a reason for anyone not to buy the system. And yes, I called Micorsoft's customer support to confirm this. So this is indeed a very good reason not to buy the system.

The funny thing is, I didn't buy it. It was a brand new unit supplied by microsoft to replace my previous console that red ringed after 8 months!.
All games appear to freeze, except castle crashers strangely. I've tried clearing the cache and running wihtout the Hard drive. I'm going to check the dash number and compare it to my friends workling xbox.
I'm convinced its the fault of a minor update that went online on either tuesday or wednesday. Consoles quite cool when freezing + I could leave it running for a few hours without any freezing at the dashboard menu. I'm aware alot of xbl users are experiencing the same problem after live underwent maintenance.

I have owned a 360 for just over a year now. It was noisy, clunky, would have problems reading disks and ended up with selective RROD (only happened if you turned it on from the controller. If you used the front button it was fine!). So I contacted microsoft and I had it picked up and replaced within 10 days.
Its the same machine but now its quiet and (touch wood) doesn't do any of the other horrible things it used to do!

You mean it's a refurbished system. MS doesn't send people new ones. They send out old ones that probably once had RROD and were fixed.Diabollokus wrote:The funny thing is, I didn't buy it. It was a brand new unit supplied by microsoft to replace my previous console that red ringed after 8 months!
I don't know about the update issue. All they did was a routine maintenance for Live in preparation for the update coming in fall. It shouldn't effect your system at all. I haven't had any problems. Have you tried playing your 360 disconnected from Live? And do other XBLA games other than CC lock up on you, or is it just disc games? Could just be your disc drive. If it keeps happening, I'd induce RROD and send it back for another one.
Its all the same shit really - new replacement parts complementing working parts equal working machines.subcons wrote: You mean it's a refurbished system. MS doesn't send people new ones. They send out old ones that probably once had RROD and were fixed.
And yes, Ceph is absolutely right about having a Japanese system, which is one of the reasons I refuse to buy an import 360 for the shmups. If it goes tits up, Microsofts policy is the same as Sony's and Nintendo's - you need to return it to the country of origin.
However, talking about domestic machines, with such a fantastic library of games played over such a solid online service, I'm surprised the 360 doesn't appeal to more people.
Then again, perhaps its just this forum.

It doesn't probably appeal to more people because most of out old machines are working great. The 360 is doomed to failureeventually and Microsoft will probably cancel support like they do for every outdated product of theirs. My point is that it is a fairly complex and fragile machine.
Do you plan on playing your 360 5 years from now when the 720 comes out? I'm a bit suprised that less people don't buy one, just sending the broken machines back will eventually not be possible and you will have a dead system on your hands. The 360 is basically a rent-a-console.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I have friends who have never sent back a 360 at all, and work with three people who had PS3 drives pack up in the first month (mine included. I replaced it, sold it, never looked back.)Pixel_Outlaw wrote:It doesn't probably appeal to more people because most of out old machines are working great. The point is you're welcome to call it whatever you want if it makes you feel better about missing an entire generation of fantastic games and online play.
What should be more worrying is picking up a console for £30 in a bargain bucket in six years time and going online with GOW or Call of Duty 4 and finding there's no one to play with.
It's all happening right now, and its lots of fun.

Sorry, but...

I am missing out, I know Skykid, but I'm better off this way.
I've got enough stuff to play for the rest of my life anyway. I can't justify buying one right now.
Besides, shmups are forever.

I can understand some people who have gone through multiple 360s, finally getting fed up with sending them back, saying fuck MS and moving onto something else, but not buying one all together just because you feel some need to boycott MS or you're scared of it happening to you is just stupid. I've had the same once since shortly after launch. It has it's issues, but overall, it works fine.
As for the longevity issue, a lot of this newer generation stuff is irrelevant into the future. Stuff that will be coming out later will take its place. It's not really like classic gaming is to most of us. The only games I own for my PS2 are arcade shooter ports. I own nothing for my XBOX; the only reason I keep it is because its modded and it's basically a media center. Once the next wave of systems comes out I have every intention of moving on and maybe keeping my 360 for the same reasons I keep my PS2. By then, if it does break, they'll be so dirt cheap just like the DCs are now that I can just pick another one up no problem. Come to think of it though, there probably won't be a need as backwards compatibility seems to be a trend that is here to stay in gaming consoles now and into the future.
If the games interest you, then get one now. You're just missing out.
Not so smart and stuff.ceph wrote:That is exactly why I won't buy a threeshitsty for now. I don't care what awesome games there are as long as the hardware is shoddy.

On a retro centered site its likely there are plenty that feel the same way. I'm a massive retro freak but I still like to (work says = have to) dabble in the current. Games like the Orange Box (and Portal), BioShock, Call of Duty 4, and pre-emptively, Gears of War 2, are all fantastic reasons to get involved, both on and offline. XBLA has quite a few shmups that you don't need to be in JP to appreciate, including TH Excelica and Joint Strike, as well as a host of others, like the incredible Geometry Wars.
Believe me, the name Microsoft was like fingernails down a blackboard for me at one point. I almost hate to say it - but the boys have done good. The machine, is good.
