Controller/Joystick recommendations?
Controller/Joystick recommendations?
Okay, here's the deal. I play most of my shmups via MAME and my PS2 and it's fairly obvious that the default controls for both suck. What I need is a joystick or even a gamepad that'll suit my needs for playing shmups and probably fighting games too. Since I'm new to this gaming scene I have absolutely no idea what I should get. Any recommendations for either?
The hori ex2 for the xbox 360 is like $60 and it works on the PC. This would probably be the cheapest way to use an arcade stick for mame. The buttons are not the best and the joystick is kinda loose, but if you don't have any thing top end to compare it to it shouldn't be a big deal.
If you wanted a single stick for both you could get a ps2 stick and a usb adapter for it. The only problem is that ps2 sticks are not in stores so you have to order online, and they would most likely cost more than $60. The other choice would be getting a ps2 stick made, or making it your self, but this is also expensive.

I play shooting games on my PS2 with a Saturn PS2 pad - best d-pad your gonna find. They are pricey, but likely the best you will get if you wanna go the game pad route. The pad was also released in USB form for PC use. Ever since getting my Sigma Raijin, however, I wish I would have invested in a good arcade stick and adapters for all my consoles.
i'm also interested to buy an arcade stick for all my consoles/pc mame

honestly, it's a piece of junk. you can change out the stock parts to happ parts, but from what i've read this is a pain. and the multisystem adaptors are supposedly laggy. when i first started looking around for a good stick the xarcade was the first thing i ran across too, and i almost bought one. so glad i didn't.akumajo wrote:i'm also interested to buy an arcade stick for all my consoles/pc mame

if you're going to get a hori ex2, i would recommend modding it, but it's kind of a pain. an hrap would cost more as you would have to import one, but is well worth the money. also, the street fighter 4 sticks that are coming out look to be amazing (all sanwa from the get-go, and rumored to be cheaper then an hrap). if you can wait a little while, i'd recommend picking up one of them.
and the trading section on the SRK forums can be a good place to find new and used sticks. you need to register to view it though.
