If you already own Under Defeat it would be easier downloading the whole game as a self-boot. Works with VGA.

There's a special utopia vga boot disc out there.
This disc will boot up, but you will not get any image, like the normal boot disc, but just after the disc stops loading open and put in a vga game. It will work. Good luck

i went nuts downloading & trying out every utopia-bootdisc i could find online - none made VGA for me happen though...

but there is a disc that works with all DC-originals that have a VGA-mode and even forces this mode onto some that haven't:

Its not a special version of utopia, the regular version will boot VGA as well, it just can't display the "swap discs" screen since it itself is not VGA. As stated, just wait awhile after the blank screen, swap and continue.

When I put the utopia disk in the screen goes back to the DC menu saying this disk is not compatible with the requested resolution e.g. VGA.

espibara: I didn't say create a self-boot, but to download the game as a self-boot. No harm in that if you already have a legal copy, right? Creating a selfboot on the other, that would be very awesome.

1. Disconnect your pc monitor from the VGA box
2. Flip the switch on your VGA box to "TV" mode
3. Put in the Utopia disc, close door, and power on
4. Wait a minute or two for the Utopia disc to boot (there will be no picture)
5. Open the lid, take out utopia disc
6. Flip the VGA box to "VGA" mode
7. Connect your pc monitor back to your vga box
8. Insert your VGA game and close lid

i must admit i never tried this procedure with one of my various utopias, so maybe the actually work :?

but i'll stick to the dc-x anyways - there it's just step 3, 5 & 8 :)

I use the Gameshark disc to boot imports. Works great in VGA. You will need a second controller with the Gameshark memory card in slot 2.

I use an original DC-X on my VGA monitor with no problems.

Got it from Play-Asia for about $14 from memory. Although I think they're sold out these days.

Or you could get another console for Japanese games. Dreamcasts are relatively inexpensive, a Japanese one shouldn't cost too much. I have 2 USA consoles, one is flashed to boot up JP region discs on start up, so no more boot discs for me.

Apologies for re-opening a really old thread.

I’ve searched best I can but can’t find a definitive answer. Anyone on here know if there is a boot disc I can use on my PAL Dreamcast that will definitely allow me to boot Jap games in VGA?

I’ve got numerous different versions of Utopia, when used I can hear game loading after disc swap but no picture.

I’ve just got a lovely CRT VGA monitor which is why I’ve finally decided to try to sort this out.

Cheers.

Do you have a VGA box or cable with an RGB/VGA (TV/PC) switch? If so, can you try tricking it into VGA by booting the Dreamcast in RGB mode, then flipping it during the Sega licensing/Windows CE screen?

I used Dreamcast Import Enabler in the end (DC-IE).

It works great if anyone has this issues in future.
