I have Sony cyber shot, it seems to be pretty good aside from eating up batteries. My friend has some Olympus camera that takes good pictures. I think Canon cameras are supposed to be the best though.

I’ve heard that it’s best to get at least a six mega pixel one. Anything below that is supposed to look kind of bad. I think most of them are at least seven now though.

I purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS75 from Amazon for about eighty dollars after I dropped my Sony Cyber-shot and damaged it. My Panasonic camera is better, anyway!

Megapixel count is the new megahertz - don't rely on these numbers for image quality. Sure, higher megapixel cameras can make bigger photos, but in the typical shitty subcompact camera you get a lot of noise in the photos. My ancient (2002, announced in August 2001!) Sony DSC-F707 has shit quality (due to its age) but the 5 megapixel count works just fine for anything but making photo prints, and if you're doing that you shouldn't be limiting yourself to a $200 camera, end of story.

I would direct you to www.dpreview.com but most of those cameras are out of the stated price range...so here, use this link:

The pink camera is just so you, P_HAT...

Unfortunately most (all?) of the sub-$400 cameras don't have their own reviews, so you're kinda buying by brand.

Generally speaking, Canon = digital cameras, Sony = camcorders.

Some other fun stuff courtesy Wired -

RAW is (usually) better
Hacked firmware for Canon cameras - check out that awesome picture! Takes the shutter speed from 1/1600 to 1,60,000 second. Dang.

Don't buy a Sony; they have their own special memory sticks.

Just a few months ago I bought a Canon PowerShot SD850IS (8 megapixel compact) that has worked out for me pretty well (I use it for the photos on my Blog mostly) and takes SD/SDHC cards for memory. It's also small enough to be easily pocketable, which makes it easy to carry around. I wish it was better in low light, but that's more of a nitpick than anything. I think the SD850 is discontinued now, but the SD1100 is pretty much functionally identical, and Amazon has it for $174.88 right now.

I've heard the image quality on the Sony models is pretty good, but using memory sticks instead of SD could be an issue. Be aware that the Olympus cameras use a proprietary memory type (xD) as well. My last camera was an Olympus, and I found that the xD memory was really slow to transfer pictures off the card, which would make me hesitant to recommend it.

The current Sony digital cameras (and camcorders as well) nowdays use the Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo type of memory cards. They will work fine with the older first generation Sony memory card readers such as the original Memory Stick that came out back in 1999-2000 through the use of a Sony "Memory Stick Pro" adapter. Plus you can stick the same Pro Duo card into an PSP and use it right away without the need for such an adapter which is a plus in my book. ^_~

-----------------------
Here's the small list in chronological order of issue of Sony's memory sticks:

original Sony Memory Stick
2nd gen Sony Memory Stick Pro
3rd gen Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo
-----------------------

I've seen the official Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 8GB version card for $109.99 USD at my local Best Buy yesterday.

Of course to save some $$$, you could opt for the 3rd-party Sandisk produced Memory Stick Pro Duo type of memory cards -- they work equally just fine compared to the official Sony ones without having to shell too much more $$$. You do get what you pay for. ^_~

According to Sony of Japan, such a Pro Duo type of memory card can theoretically hold up to a whopping 32GB of data. Would be mucho expensive upon intial debut, of course.

PCE Fan, if you were trying to stick up for Sony's cards, the only point you made is about being able to use it with the PSP.

On Amazon, the Sandisk 8GB MicroSDHC card is 25 bucks, where the cheapest Sony Memory Stick of that size is twice as much. There are adaptors so you can use microsd cards on Sony Memory Stick slots, but I don't know how fast or reliable that would be.

If you read in my earlier post, you find out that I mentioned that with the Sony/Sandisk Pro Duo cards, you can use them in Sony's line of digital cameras, camcorders and, of course, the PSP. Thanks for the heads up about the microSD cards...good to know about them. ^_~

Not to sound like an asshole, but this is essentially a duplicate thread, we discussed digital cameras not too long ago. ^_^

That thread doesn't completely fail (even though I WASN'T INVITED <_<;) because moozoh made a good post about the pixelrace & sensor size/noise.

Somewhat related: one of the Wikihows selected for iGoogle today was this one BOOM.
