Newbie need some help w/ building a supergun

Post by rolins »

In month or two I plan to build my first supergun. I don't have enough money to do it yet but in the meantime I'm just doing research. Trying to get a solid idea of the parts I need to buy and how I'm going to put it together. I thought about following this persons model on his cheap homemade jamma. It's clear and straight to the point, and I have a XRGB-2 so I don't have to spend $100 on video encoder when I can hookup a scart lead. I'm still scratching head on few details.

1.) Jammaboards.com has a 110w arcade power supply for sale. Is this more than enough power to run Toaplan, Cave, and MVS pcb? Or should I buy a bigger one?

3.) When I connect the RGB lines from the jamma harness to DB-9, I solder the ground wire to the metal underside of the DB-9 connector. Is that correct?

2.) Last, can someone suggest a pair of 8ohm speakers I should get? Something low budget but with a 3.5mm stereo mini. Possibly a passive computer speaker since it has an enclosure case.

Thanks in advance. :)

The gamesx JAMMA primer and JAMMA pinout are pretty much all I used to build my gun, you'll be fine.

When you build your own stuff, you are free to choose whatever pin assignments you want, so GND can go on any pin or the outer shield of DB-9, it's up to you but you should chalk up a consistent pinout that you can re-use between all your stuff, I think there is a suggested pin assignment at gamesx also.

Personally I put GND on the outer shell of DB-9...

Thanks guys for the help. I'm still wondering about the power requirements. Is 110w PS more than enough to play MVS, Cave, and Toaplan PCB?

The voltage of the PSU is not the area of concern. As long as the PSU outputs 5v and 12v you should be ok. Some PCB's use -5v but they are rare and most of them are very old.

I think the question is not voltage, but current, and I would say a 110W PSU will give way more than enough current to run the PCBs in question.

Awesome, that's all I needed to know. :)

For speakers, you can pretty much use any generic speaker you pull off a stereo system, the kind with a Red+Black wire pair. PC speakers I don't think will work, I think it has something to do with how they amplify from an external power source.

Sound wiring will be a problem. MVS uses a stereo sound output while Cave and Toaplan both run in mono. So you'll have to wire up a switch to allow both to work. Shouldn't be TOO hard but might require some work.

Also, don't bother with a sound attenuation circuit. They only serve to give you an extra headache to deal with.

Thanks, for info. I have speakers from my old stereo system with the red+black wires. Maybe I can use those.

Also, will MVS work okay if I hookup just mono? I want to make this supergun very simple.
