Is it normal for my stick to do this?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

So I recently acquired the Asciiware ps1 arcade stick. (7 usd) it seems to be in good condition but if I pull a bit up and to the left it sometimes does not recenter. I'm fairly new to using arcade sticks but does one usually need to push down slightly to prevent the stick from sticking? I wanted to use it for MAME with my ps2-PC adapter.

Here is the model:

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

no shouldn't be doing that.

check to see the stick has enough room and is not getting caught on the bottom of the casing :) if it's not that, try some WD40

Oi. Make sure everything is clearing. It would probably benefit you to take apart the stick and, if necessary, apply some grease. Check the spring/spider/grommet to make sure everything is positioned correctly/not worn. Also check out the switches, if it has them, to see if they're worn or otherwise out of position.

Ok I'll try to take it apart later this evening. Some of the screws lie under foam pad circles. I'm going to have to be careful not to destroy the little pads while trying to get the screws out.

I had one of these and it stuck to the left sometimes. Although the stick was still centered.

I sold mine to a guy in STL and he paid for $30 for it.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I doubt that many people outside the American Midwest know that STL stands for St. Louis, Missouri.

I paid $70.00+ USD for an Asciiware PSX joystick brand new from Toys-R-Us back in late 1997. Worth every penny and used it for the 1997-1998 Working Designs PSX Raystorm contest. Placed well enough to win a Raystorm mouse pad as a consolation prize. If I could place that well, it is, indeed, a damn fine PSX joystick for shmups. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on what PSX joystick you used & if it's been further modded with Sanwa or Seimitsu parts for that true world-class Japanese arcade spec joystick setup. ^_~

I like how you can adjust the auto-fire to your personal liking via that cool variable sliding switch setup. Plus the fact that the joystick base is as big as the original gray-colored PSX console itself with matching color scheme is ace in my book. Ascii did their homework with this particular PSX joystick with it's Japanese styled short-throw ball-top setup and if properly tuned and lubricated (no Sex Wax here, folks), it works wonders for your shmupping needs. ^_~
