What is your favorite DonPachi shooter?

Post by robivy64 »

In my opinion it doesn't get any better than the DonPachi series. My personal favorite is DDP: Doj.

Sorry, DDP II does not count.

Well since I've only played the first 3 of them so far...I'd say DOJ is my favorite right now for and hour of brain melting difficulty.

I will also mention that I have not played the new one, although I have seen videos that do not impress me.

DonPachi! The first!

Ever since some people started referring to the series as the DoDonPachi series, I always feel as if poor ol' DonPachi was never included in that set of Pachi's.... :(

I don't really like any of them, but the one I dislike the least is Dodonpachi.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I'm going to say DonPachi for now, but that opinion may change after I spend more time with DDP and DDP DOJ.

I doubt I'll ever play the newest one.

I´m not voting given that I only played the first two ones, and I prefer DDP by a large margin - DP just feels very empty to me, and DDP is the first game that really feels like a Cave game and not post-Toaplan.

I really want to play DOJ, it has a very gloomy atmosphere about it that appeals to me (it shares this trait with Ketsui), and DFK just looks totally non-DDP to me somehow.

But I guess my vote would go for DDP since it´s the Cave shooter that "started it all". And within that game the level 3 boss and level 4 is probably my favourite part since it perfectly fits my skill level  It also has a very chunky feel about it that later titles like ESPRaDe or Progear are missing. Maybe it´s the pretty big bullet size that makes the game feel a lot tighter. DDP feels very focused.

The first and second are most accessible. Before the series tried to be "hardcore" and went to hell. I also like the graphics better in the first and second, they are sharp and vibrant.

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

So, is Daifukkatsu bad, or do most people simply have no experience with it?

I dunno. Sounds more like sub-par war game tunes to me. The horrible sound quality doesn´t help, either - it´s barely audible over the CRASH CHUKKA CHUKKA sound effects most of the time. But to each his own

Also, that laser sound effect from the green heli sounds like fingernails on chalkboard :x

The only thing DP has going for it over DDP is the announcer. Otherwise it is quite meh I think, and above all it is cheap as fuck. The first 3 levels are a walk in the park and then it just gets silly, with lots of crap from behind and lateron all sides. And ships shooting you in your ass when they are almost offscreen and that kinda stuff. Dodonpachi on the other hand is fair all the time.

Atm I like Dodonpachi best, I have DOJ as well, but that kicks my ass to much still.
Have not played the newest one either.

I do like the original sprite art of the first two compared to the pre-rendered DOJ, but in the end they are all good, all good, people.

I consider it to have the best music since its the only one that has tunes that I could still bring to mind after I turned the machine off (I play the PS port btw)

I wouldn't actually listen to it on my ipod or anything...probably

DDP solely because it has been tormenting me with my inability to 1CC it. I swear to god I will do it this semester. Two days ago, I managed to get 1-6's boss to around a three pixel sliver before I lost my last life.

I don't know why it's taking me so long.

edit: Afijsagagew it just happened again :x

I only played the first three so I'll speak based on that so skip the wall of text if needed and go to the last line to read the final comment:

DDP DOJ has this "hard as fuck" in-your-face difficulty that makes you scream for mercy yet at the same time you shout "throw the entire planet at me, I don't care" plus nothing like that glorious boss warning message. Add a bit of "man, look at that chain counter!". Makes you think about some cross over between shooter and Street Fighter. Stuff explodes, bosses vomit cascades of fast shit without hesitation, etc.

DonPachi has the extremely cool announcer/co-pilot always throwing silly and over the top comments (god, how I miss this, we need more silly co-pilots throwing one liners), the nice sprites and (I have to agree) good movie-like exaggerated music.

DoDonPachi is just rock 'n' roll. D-D-DO-DON-PACHI! While I think the lack of co-pilot shouting hilarity hurts the game a bit, everything feels perfected from the previous release... Personally, I just freaking love Stage 2/5 tune and the whole style of that single track is just so badass (especially if you can hear it outside of the game with good speakers) despite being so short.

Oh, of course, the graphics, the explosions, the highly rewarding sensation of tearing down everything (this goes for all the 'Pachis) and that playing these with someone else is also a good way of forgetting of the anal scoring system and have heaps of fun.

In short: I just can't pick one since they all have something to offer.

I like the patterns and levels in DOJ a lot but the excessive difficulty is the only downside. DDP has one of the most balanced difficulty ever and for that reason it's my favorite shmup ever.

Well, I am not fit to place a vote since I have yet to play the new one.

Of the 4 I have played (you forgot the grand Bee Storm cart rob) I would have to say I've gotten the most enjoyment out of Donpachi just cause of the age of it, but when I play, would prefer Dodonpachi. Dai Ou Jou had too many graphical and musical/atmospherical changes to be my favorite. Though I love all 3 of those titles dearly.

It's DDP for me, not even close. I have the first three, and play DDP about 100x more often than the other two. I'm kind of obsessed with it, actually. I play it on Saturn, PSX, and MAME all the time. And yet, with all my hundreds of hours of playtime, I can't get the 1cc.. It's like it taunts me by looking so beatable, then kills me in spots where I have no business dying. It got worse when I saw my brother beat it about 2 years ago, and I still can't. I feel like I'm closer to beating ESPGaluda, at least I get to the last boss regularly in that.

DP seems fun at first, but then it gets real cheap real fast. DOJ is just way too damn hard for me, I get to the third level and then watch my ship explode many times. I've watched videos of the new one, and it looks way too hard to be much fun, though I would buy it right away if it ever got a console release.

Nice to see the love for the original DonPachi being shown.

I have to agree with the poll so far in that DDP and DDP: Doj are difficult determine for best game in the series.

I guess DDP's my favorite, but I haven't played DOJ, or DFK.

DOJ has way better music than DDP though, that alone might make it my favorite whenever I get around to playing it.

I prefer DP to DDP to DOJ. I don't really know anything about more recent installments.
