Looking for a specific handheld game of yesteryear..
I'm wanting to know if anyone can help me here. I'm looking for a game made some time ago that is advertised to have like 100 games on it and also a built in calculator. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please link me to some info. It was just one of those TV things in the 90's. Also as a side note, what are good handheld games. I'm talking the non mainstream ones...
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Sounds like it was a black & white LCD-based gaming handheld, right?Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I'm wanting to know if anyone can help me here. Or was it a color LCD-based one instead?

I remember that! The voiceover said "never EVER buy those expensive cartridges again!"MathU wrote:I know exactly what you're talking about, but it's on the tip of my tongue. Didn't they throw an SNES cartridge in a trashcan and call it obsolete?
Then they had a list of the games scroll on the screen and it had stuff like 12 games of Bricks.
I think EGM even did a parody review of the system... but I don't remember its name, or even if it had a specific one. It was B&W LCD, though.

I recall getting a mysterious package in the mail once. Turns out that it was a complementary gift for subscribing to EGM...it was one of those cool black & white LCD-based handheld gaming systems with a bunch of games installed on it. The name of it is "Game Pro Jr." and is powered by two "AAA" batteries. There are many interesting games to try out, including some sped up versions of the same game. It does look like it could play a carbon-copy of Tetris but the handheld system doesn't have it installed.
The cool 16-bit powered Pelican branded full color LCD-based "VG Pocket" Caplet version handheld (with 50 different built-in games to choose from including Space Invaders II, Bust-a-Move better known as Puzzle Bobble and even a cool version of Data East's Burger Time) has two cool generic shmup titles on it, Tiger Rescue (a nice clone spin-off of Neo-Geo MVS Aero Fighters) and Blaze of Glory (a nice clone spin-off U.N. Squadron of Capcom CPS-1 fame). It retails for a mere $29.99 USD and can be bought at your local Gamestop. It even has a cool TV out composite video and mono audio jack output support but you have to buy this speciality cable seperately which is another $9.99 USD.

Yes. I have the calculator one shaped kind of like a controller and I have another one that is black colored, has no calculator, and has speech samples in poor English. I also had a small keychain handheld from MGA which also had different block games variations.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Yeap the black and white bricky like thing.
I don't remember if the calculator on has it, but the black one has a ton of Tetris variations and the calculator one shares some of the same games with the black one. The MGA keychain one not only had Tetris, but had similar sound effects to the Tetris Jr keychain handheld. One thing I didn't like about some of these handhelds is that the difficulty goes back to the easiest level once the hardest one is complete.
