Donkey Kong is a brutally difficult game
Donkey Kong is a brutally difficult game
I'm not anywhere close to as good at shmups as a lot of people on this board... for a sense of skill, I can at least make it to the last boss in most of the more popular shmups on MAME (or if I can't, I could with a little time). But I'll be damned if I can beat three or so levels in Donkey Kong. It's just killer.
Anyone else have this experience?

I went to the third loop in the arcades in the day, maybe the 4th. But with MAME I can't do anything but I'm playing a crappy joypad. I'm hoping to get a PS3 hori pro for the task sometime soon.
Bubble bobble isn't that hard if you know the cheat in MAME, its about 15 keystrokes on the title screen and gives you all the power ups from the start. You can also do it ingame to immediately get them again after dying. I can get to level 50 with 1 credit regularly. Like any game, those hard levels are only hard when you don't know the system to beat it.
Try Moon patrol, thats absolutely killer towards the end of loop 2.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

My first and only experience with Donkey Kong occurred when I was about twelve years old and played Donkey Kong 64. I spent a lot of time in Frantic Factory trying to get the special coin from the arcade machine. =O
This summer I tried to play Donkey Kong on MAME after I watched The King of Kong with Necronopticous, but I didn't play very well; it's hard.
Now I remember how much I want to squirt Capri Sun up Billy Mitchell's nose and punch it.

Yeah, well, I don't like to cheat. ;Dneorichieb1971 wrote: Bubble bobble isn't that hard if you know the cheat in MAME, its about 15 keystrokes on the title screen and gives you all the power ups from the start. As for Donkey Kong, I first played it when I was really little, like 3-4 years old. Ironically, I think I was better at it then than I am at it now, 14-15 years later. :P

You know, you should try to give the 2D forums it's own look a bit. It looks way too much like this forum. I like how it's sorta this page's sister site, but if it looked a bit more original, I think that would be cool.Ceph wrote:I think it's not that hard, but I don't exclusively play shmups all the time.
Maybe you need some practice
May I invite you to join 2Dgaming.net? I'm sure you'll get some inspirations about good non-shmup 2D games there.

Donkey Kong II arcade upright shown at CAX 2008...
There was a cool guy who brought in a modified Donkey Kong cabinet with custom-made art side panels and front marquee that said "Donkey Kong II". It has all new stages for Mario the Jumpman to conquer. It was shown for the entire two days that the 2008 California Extreme show was on. I wonder if Nintendo Co. Ltd. agrees with this Donkey Kong PCB mod? ^_~
