Donkey Kong is a brutally difficult game

Post by captpain »

I'm not anywhere close to as good at shmups as a lot of people on this board... for a sense of skill, I can at least make it to the last boss in most of the more popular shmups on MAME (or if I can't, I could with a little time). But I'll be damned if I can beat three or so levels in Donkey Kong. It's just killer.

Anyone else have this experience?

I think it's not that hard, but I don't exclusively play shmups all the time.
Maybe you need some practice ;)

May I invite you to join 2Dgaming.net? I'm sure you'll get some inspirations about good non-shmup 2D games there.

Yeah... I don't play much 2D apart from the occasional NES game and lots of shmups, so maybe that's my problem. I'll give it some practice, and also I'm going to check out that site right now.

edit: woah it's like bizarro shmups.com

Donkey Kong is a mean game. I've completed a whole rotation of stages before, but it just keeps getting harder from there.

Bubble Bobble is another mean game too. It lures you in with a bunch of easy stages, then smacks you in the face with a really hard one.

2Dgaming.net was created by and for the cool people in this forum, because it seemed there was some demand for a place to talk about 2D gaming in general, not just shmups. That's why it looks similar.

I looped it the first time I ever played it on a real cabinet. Playing it on the DS via emulation, it seems a lot harder.

I went to the third loop in the arcades in the day, maybe the 4th. But with MAME I can't do anything but I'm playing a crappy joypad. I'm hoping to get a PS3 hori pro for the task sometime soon.

Bubble bobble isn't that hard if you know the cheat in MAME, its about 15 keystrokes on the title screen and gives you all the power ups from the start. You can also do it ingame to immediately get them again after dying. I can get to level 50 with 1 credit regularly. Like any game, those hard levels are only hard when you don't know the system to beat it.

Try Moon patrol, thats absolutely killer towards the end of loop 2.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

My first and only experience with Donkey Kong occurred when I was about twelve years old and played Donkey Kong 64. I spent a lot of time in Frantic Factory trying to get the special coin from the arcade machine. =O

This summer I tried to play Donkey Kong on MAME after I watched The King of Kong with Necronopticous, but I didn't play very well; it's hard.

Now I remember how much I want to squirt Capri Sun up Billy Mitchell's nose and punch it.

Yeah, well, I don't like to cheat. ;D

As for Donkey Kong, I first played it when I was really little, like 3-4 years old. Ironically, I think I was better at it then than I am at it now, 14-15 years later. :P

That game had a lot of annoying leaps of faith and jumping through narrow spike lined gaps.

You know, you should try to give the 2D forums it's own look a bit. It looks way too much like this forum. I like how it's sorta this page's sister site, but if it looked a bit more original, I think that would be cool.

I've made it to loop 3. Doesn't seem so bad after a few goes.

Donkey Kong II arcade upright shown at CAX 2008...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

There was a cool guy who brought in a modified Donkey Kong cabinet with custom-made art side panels and front marquee that said "Donkey Kong II". It has all new stages for Mario the Jumpman to conquer. It was shown for the entire two days that the 2008 California Extreme show was on. I wonder if Nintendo Co. Ltd. agrees with this Donkey Kong PCB mod? ^_~
