What cool homebrew Vectrex game carts do you recommend?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I bought one of those cool General Consumer Electronic's Vectrex console used. The controller that came with it was alright but the internal spring that controls the up & down portion snapped and still needs to be replaced to this very day. Naturally, I opted for a brand new Vectrex Control Panel instead...set me back a very pretty penny. ^_~

I've been out of the loop when it comes to Vectrex user created game titles. What cool homebrew Vectrex games would you guys and gals recommend?

And how good is the gameplay of the homebrew cartridge of Vectrex "Debris" shmup game?

I recall trying out the ultra-rare Cinematronics produced arcade game version of Cosmic Chasm (with full-color vector-based graphics and a different control panel setup) at the California Extreme show in 2005. It was the only Vectrex console game of the same name to get it's very own arcade game iteration circa 1983. Very different and vastly improved game compared to the original version, indeed. ^_~

Thanks in advance for your helpful advice and suggestions...

I've got a vectrex too, but have been out of that scene for awhile as well. I wish I could buy a new controller, only because the top to my joystick is missing (I just screwed some random knob on it for now).

Anyway, I'd say just download the homebrew rom and play it on an emulator to see if its worth buying in a cart version. I remember there being a multicart with every game ever made (including homebrews) but I don't know if anyone is keeping that up to date and selling them anymore.

Ah yes, the Sean Kelly produced Vectrex Multicart. I think there were three different versions that came out with Vectrex Multicart 2.0 being the very last one made. The only bad thing about getting such a multicart is that it doesn't come with the required colored screen overlays that came with the real Vectrex game carts back in 1982-1983.

I recall that a guy by the name of Tony Price back in 1999-2000 was offering such reproduction Vectrex game screen overlays for $225.00 USD for a complete set. I thought that it was a bit pricey and passed it up at the time. Oh well...I guess I'll just have to buy a replacement Mine Storm screen overlay and be content with that one. ^_~

I've got the Sean kelly cart(rocks) along with some homebrews. Protector/YASI is fantastic. Spot on ports of Defender and Space Invaders(which even uses the vector display for raster graphics). I also have Thrust and Gravitrex, which are balls hard games for those who enjoy gravity based shooters.

Those three I can definitely recommend, and they're pretty readily available from Dondzila.
