Best 80's cartoon of all time?

Post by Skykid »

Vote with your hearts.

I've included as many the poll will allow, and the most relevant for this forum (as a couple are game related.)

For me it was really tough, but in the end I plumped for Captain N: the gamesmaster. It brought me serious joy when I was little. How robbed the younger generations are these days eh?

MASK was awesome! It did have the really crappy Speed Racer/NASCAR-type episodes at the end though.

Hmm, shit.

Forgot about TMNT

I had Mask but omitted it because I didn't think it would be that strong a contender.
Others I omitted:

Denver the last Dinosaur

The Wuzzles

Dogtanian

Captain Planet

Centurions

etc.

This thread is fail - not enough poll options.

No question about my heart, which beat to Transformers, back in the '80's! Peter Cullen is one heck of a voice actor, and Optimus Prime was truly my childhood hero. The hair-metal rock and outstanding animation in the movie was the the cherry on the pie for me, although I continued watching the show through about 1988.

For a great interview with Cullen, check this out:

Before Transformers, I was a huge fan of the Pac-Man cartoon. (The game Pac-Land was based off it.) In the late '80's I really got into Garfield and Friends, Duck Tales, and the Alf cartoon, which I still think was better then the show.

TMNT
Captain Planet
Inspector Gadget
He-Man
GI Joe... so since that's the only one up there, it's the one I voted for.

An honorable mention should be made of The Moomins (both the early 80's stop-animation series and the early 90's anime).

There was also this surprisingly dark cartoon show about a protective house gnome that I liked. Can't seem to recall it's name though....

Aww, no Smurfs!

Batman TAS was great, but I refuse to vote for a 90s cartoon in this poll.

Nope, although that was an awesome show as well.
The show I'm thinking about starred a young (by Brownie/Household deity standards, I think he was 200+ year old) house-gnome/gremlin/elf that lived in the attic of an old Irish(?) manor and relied on the tenants belief in him to keep him strong/alive and to battle evil spirits and the like. He had a crush on the girl living there I think and was overprotective of her (along with being a bit pranksterous/selfish), but ultimately it developed into a quest against an ancient evil that threatened both her and the family line.
It's Icelandic name was Baldvin litli Búálfur, I think.

Hell I was a child of the 80's I loved cartoons in general from that era, kids these days can't really wake up on a Saturday morning and turn on the TV and have cartoons on all the major networks. The only thing they get on those mornings now are news shows, hell even weekday mornings had the cartoon magic, that too is long gone (unless you have DVD's, then the magic can last a long time). Hell I even liked the cheesy Pac Man cartoon of the early 80's.

Wow, that doesn't sound familiar at all. I don't suppose you'd know if it was ever aired in the US would you? What does Baldvin litli Búálfur translate to in English?

put another vote for The Real Ghostbusters . I am kinda surprised there are so many fans of it, it's by far my favourite cartoon of that time.

And I also am surprised people actually *REMEMBER* M.A.S.K. . I'd put it in a good 2nd place.

When I saw the title thread, I first thought "Bleh, no one would mention my favourite ones". I'm glad I was wrong :)

Dungeons and Dragons was my favourite cartoon. MCOG and Ulysses 31 came close behind.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Mysterious Cities of Gold gets it for me. An entire generation of people here was brought up loving this. When DVDs were released here it was bought massively.

I doubt that it was aired in the US, but I can't be sure. Maybe Britain, since it happened in an Irish/Scottish-y countryside? It had some obscure occult elements in it that bordered on being Shinto based, so maybe it's originated from Japan. The style was certainly anime-ish, although not in a traditional sense.
Baldvin litli Búálfur literally translates into Baldvin the little House-elf.

Hells yeah! 70's/80's historical and literature-themed anime series were the best! I have fond memories of shows such as The Three Musketeers, The Rose of Versailles and 80 days as well. I'd rather have those shows back than the borderline scary crapolla that they force feed kids today.
Speaking of edutainment: I also recall two excellent French cartoon shows about this bearded professor that lectured a group of kids on the inner workings of the body and history. Sounds lame, but it was done in such a fun manner that you really wanted to become a scientist/doctor when you grew up.
