Trains in shmups

Post by Skykid »

Is it mandatory that shmups have to have levels with trains in them? It's weird, as they tend to be around the third level all the time too. Couldn't we be chasing something else, like...big Jeeps?

I can think of loads, but I won't spoil the fun, so I'll start with a few - feel free to add to the list:

Giga Wing
Ibara
Raiden Fighters 2
Always outnumbered, never outgunned - No zuo no die

yup. also espgaluda 2, level something.

I think I remember trains in S1945 and Garrega, but its been a while since I've played either.

those trains in ibara take the cake though. especially in black label.

Cyvern (beginning and first boss)

AND you also chase something else (multi-stage rocket(another common shmup enemy))

DoDonPachi DFK has very nice animated trains
The background in general is beautiful

Whats the point in those trains, though?
Cant we chose something like animals or so?

The point is that trains are awesome, and therefore blowing up trains is double awesome.

turbo force has some good trains that you really have to catch in order to completely blow up.

I like trains, plus fleets of big ships like in dimahoo and some other raizing games and donpachi's

Not to disrupt a pleasant conversation, but there's already a topic devoted to train stages:

This thread is worthless without a mention of: The Rail Loaders.

Kinda sucky game, but a must here in this thread.

Ooooh. Batsugun (lots of ships), Bakraid (a few ships), Gunbird (a few more ships).

What really gets to me is shumps with cars. Liek in DDP and ESPrade where you can blow up innocent commuters for +points. Perhaps we need to start an ethics in shumps thread.

lol, no. I made it disappear. I considered it was better to wipe out my previous, engrishy statement and speak more about the train section in Einhänder (what's up that nobody even acknowledged this one has voices that rock?) and the glorious Stage 3 from Zen-Ichi. I think that's where trains get blown up like mad and you were even awarded for destroying all the wagons ("Destroyed All Parts!" or something like that).

That would be a rail shooter.

(ba-dum-ching!)

It really is the same idea though. You're moving forward on rails, no deviation from the set path.
