Has anybody popped one of these things open to see about replacing the internals w/ something better?

The Japanese version has a Sanwa JLW. This was probably the first console controller to mount an actual arcade stick, 10 years earlier than the Hori RAP:

The version for the rest of the world has an unbranded stick:

Thanks, MKL :D So the JP stick is good enough to leave as is, or would you recommend something else installed?

was it just the CPS Changer version that had the Sanwa stick? I have the US SNES one and it has the green and white generic stick inside, it basically feels similar to a neogeo stick, very short throw and very sensitive.

Yes, I'm sure. The above pics are my own stick, the Japanese version that comes in this box:

On the box or in the various sheets inside there is no mention of the CPS changer, just Super Famicom. In fact I believe there is no separate CPS changer version.

The pic showing the bottom of the case is proof enough that the case is designed for JLW mount. I have never seen myself the non-Japanese version but perhaps it has the same screw holes on the bottom shell, just not used (the unbranded stick is screw mounted on the top shell), in which case it should be possible to fit a JLW in it. I don't think other arcade sticks could be mounted as neatly (screws would be visible on top).

So, both my units mount that stick, (but it's white and blue) that is screwed on the lower shell from the backside, and it looks almost like an LS-32 (which does fit in the CPSF if you remove or alter the restrictors).

These are the visible differences in the lower shell:

1) on the outside there are some additional indentations around the holes

2) on the inside there are 4 additional supports inside the square perimeter

3) the label/serial number has a white area enclosed in a black surrounding.
