Nicovideo registration guide and clip links

Post by Frederik »

http://www.nicovideo.jp

Japans alternate YouTube, with a ridiculous on-screen scrolling comment system ("wwwwwwwwwwww") and, most importantly, tons of streaming shmup vids. The video quality isn´t any better than YouTubes, but many new clips pop up on this site first.

The site requires registration, and for those who can´t read japanese, here´s a very handy translation guide:

http://thenextweb.org/2008/01/15/how-to ... ico-douga/

(I vaguely remember a site that lets you surpass the
registration process, but sadly can´t find that anymore. If anyone remembers it, please post it!)

Here are some nice clips to get you started:

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3751332
Fitting the news of the day, a video of the first level in DDPDFK 1.5 with the new green helicopter. Cave choppahs are placed on number one of my list that has girls on broomsticks and flying people as player sprites on the very bottom.

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3347798
The Angry German Kid is now a Cave TLB. I love the part around the 1:18 mark.

Sadly, I can´t search for many specific games as I don´t know japanese, but "CAVE" works, obviously. I also didn´t find a "related" list yet. You can also easily disable the on-screen comments (which I find highly annoying but seemingly the japanese love Nicovideo for this feature...) by clicking on the little bird with the text bubble below the video.

Post your nice finds here!

Aah, the "video link" thread right on top. Somehow I completely overlooked that.

Can you search for videos with non-japanese letters?

Yes, but your results will be cut down because a lot of uploaders will be using Japanese characters.

Just copy and paste from Wikipedia or something if it's something simple like the name of a game.

Just search for STG. It worked for me, though you'll get some non-shmup vids too (mostly Starfox 64/Assault)

moozooh posted this in the DDP DFK thread so credit goes to him but use this link to watch the videos without registering. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/smXXXXXXX

Just copy and paste the "smxxxxx" part of the nico video you want to watch into that url. So, for instance, the Doom final pattern, no miss would be http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm3697017

any particular reason why so many comments have the "wwwwww" thing going on? not too sure why there's perfectly normal japanese with w's interspersed, at the beginning and/or at the end. :?

w is a shortening of 笑い (warai), which means funny. It can be considered the equivalent to our 'lol'.

Seeing a stream of wwwwwwwwwwww would be the equivalent of us overabusing 'lol' like so:

lololololololololololololololololololol

Sadly, it starts with a miss, but otherwise a great demo. The second best would be that hilarious nm/nb throguh the whole fight up to the last bit of health where the player goes gameover.

For a long time I wanted to see the japanese playing DOJ Death Label:

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3459945

Player manages to reach double Hibachi on the second loop. I had no idea there were so many safe spots to abuse. Very impressive.

EDIT: Just to let people know, when you're going to login, on the first field it asks for your EMAIL ADDRESS, NOT username. This can cause some confusion.

True last bosses for a bunch of stuff.

I browse niconico all the time. It feels far less crowded than what YouTube is.

There needs to be more Muchi Muchi Pork videos, though. There's an insane lack of them on both sites.

Been browsing there for awhile, I got tired of Youtube having no videos of games I liked, or so few videos. This is pretty much the cure for what ailed me.

I've put a few credits in here and there. The best I've managed lately is around 360 million, and I made it to the Ura loop again a few weeks ago, but it was my first credit in a month or two and I totally blew it.

So, no, not really, and when my Daifukkatsu board returns Ketsui will probably be put away again for a while.

Lemme get this straight. Some random guy found some video of someone blowing up a hornet's nest and recorded the hornets going berzerk, topped off with DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou's true last boss theme?

死 ぬ が よ い
Or, in the international version:
Die, maggotts.

Anyone know how to rip/download Nico videos (to FLV)? I've tried three different plugins now, and all 3 fail...seems they changed something recently.

If you want direct download without a toolbar or plugin, you can use this site:
