I left my PS2 on last night... How much damage did I do?

Post by indstr »

I forgot to turn my PS2 off last night after playing Galuda. I switched the input back to passthrough on my hori upscan and just completely forgot to turn off the PS2. It ran idle for about 10 hours. The game was paused immediately after the last boss, not looping at the title screen.

Does it disable the laser after it's been paused for a while?

Damn I hope so... Otherwise, how bad is it for my laser to leave it on for 10 hours? :?

i wouldnt be too worried....i mean if you have ever pulled an all nighter playing a game, its pretty much the same....only the laser is actively reading in that case

if the game was paused the PS2 laser should have no reason to be reading anything so it should be fine....

id be more worried about it over heating the power supply...

but ya...you should be fine IMO

I often leave my games machines on pause overnight. Why on earth would you think you'd done any damage to it?

Even if the laser did stay on, it wouldn't matter. Ever used a CD player all day?

horrible irreversible damage

aside from the heating, it's probably less stressful on the console's cd-system than normal play where the motor (generally the weak link) is dying

I've just heard that PS2 lasers don't last very long, so I was worried I might be ending its life prematurely :( I bought this system used so who knows how long it has left.

I did feel the top and bottom for heat when I realized it was on, and it didn't even seem warm, so that's good. :)

It's no big deal as long as there's proper ventilation and a moderate outside temperature and you don't have a first-generation slim. Rest your worries and feel free to do it again if needed; it's not like a 360 where it'll just die at will.
