I can't really explain it,
perhaps it's the forked Blade-like shape,
I just love the design.
- Advanced Busterhawk (Gleylancer)
- The ships from AirBuster/Aerowings
I'm at a loss to think of any others

The Silvergun (RSG): I always thought it was pretty cool looking, not to mention that bevy of weapons (especially that sword) that it has at its disposal.
The Night Raid ship: The game itself is less than impressive, but I always liked the way the player ship looked, kinda batlike, imo.
Mackerel (Souky): All the ships in Souky are pretty neat looking (gotta love the way the wings open up to release the target web), but I always thought the Mackerel was the best from an aesthetic point of view...not sure why.
Irori (ESP Ra.de): Not exactly a "ship," but for some reason I tend to do better with her than either of the other chars, although most "serious" players (of course) prefer either of the others to her.
The Psyvariar Ship: Neat little morphing ship, the 'bots in Psyvariar 2 were cool too, but the original ships were more interesting and abstract, imo.
Pretty much the entire Parodius cast: Nothing like a stick figure riding a paper airplane, a bunnygirl straddling a missile, and a flying pig to take for a spin, heh heh.

-VF-1 Valkyrie (Macross, Super Spacefortress Macross, Scramble Valkyrie) great looking variable mecha
-Biplane of Death (Flying Shark) who would have thought you could put so many guns on a biplane?
-P-38 Lightning (Various, but most often the 19XX games) bane of the axis, approved for carrier ops!
-F-8 Crusader (Area 88 SNES) hey, it's sleek and gets you though every mission but the last two
-F-20 Tigershark (Area 88) good looking plane
-F-14 Tomcat (Area 88) good looking plane
-SA-77 Silpheed (Silpheed) wicked looking space fighter
-Vic Viper (needs no introduction) the ultimate classic shmup fighter, looks like a space sai mixed with a bayonet

In space, no one can sink your battleship!
I love pretty much all the designs in ThunderForce V, although the ship pails in comparison to some of the bosses.
I like a good cute-em-up, and a lot of those "ships" are just characters. Morrigon and Alucard from GunBird 2. Everyone in the Parodius games, especially Michael, Mambo, and Ran. I like the biblane in Game Tengoku, although Z-Dyne is the way to go.
And of course, the most awe-inspiring ships ever, the cast of Batsugun. Beltiana has the better ship, and if I ever remembered, I'd play with the second player side because that character is a better design. But no one can beat out Iceman as the baddest mother.

Silver Hawk, all models (Dariuses)- Still the coolest fighter in horizontal and vertical view.. Ever.
Aka-Usagi (Rabio Lepus/Aerofighters 3)- Twinbee with bunny ears. How can you go wrong?
Polikarpov I-16 (Aerofighters 3) - Very handy. Up the Soviets!
Widerstand (Giga Wing) - It's green. How can you go wrong?
A-10 Thunderbolt (Fighting Hawk/Aerofighters 2) - No explanation needed.
The X-Multiply ship - TENTACLES! Beautifully animated, and before the Cereberus.
The entire cast of Batrider (especially the Beyond B5700) and Bakraid.
The Vallhalyzer (sic).

Well...
-R-9A "Arrowhead" (R-Type)
It's pretty hard to beat the original R unit, which is awesome in its own right.
-R-90 (Zero) "Ragnarok" (R-Type III)
But the Ragnarok does. ;p I love the dual wave cannon and selectable force. Not to mention how cool it looks in R-Type Final.
-A-10A "Thunderbolt II" (Area 88 / UN Squadron)
My dad used to be an A-10 mechanic, so I'm obligated to think they're awesome. They're pretty awesome on their own, actually.
-SA-08 "Silpheed" (Silpheed, 1989 PC)
Better armaments than the SA-77, somehow... A lot of people don't know that there was a Silpheed before the Sega CD game. Actually, it's not even listed in the Xenocide Files section of this site.
Also, it's one of the more durable fighters in the shmup genre... this doesn't really lend to the difficulty (obviously), but it takes another 3 hits to kill the thing once the shields are down.
-SA-77 "Silpheed" (Silpheed: The Lost Planet)
It is pretty wicked looking. Was it the same craft in the Sega CD release?
-Vic Viper (Duh)
Do I have to say anything?
-Lord British
It's kind of standard looking in comparison to other Gradius ships, but I like it anyway. It's disappointing that it wasn't in Gradius V... stupid red Vic Viper lookalike.

Okay, the R9 is cool, but here's my favorite ship in R-Type Final.
R-9WF "Sweet Memories"
The cheerful name contrasts the sinister rumor about this craft. The Cyber Connector mental control interface has been greatly improved. Not only brain waves, but life energy of the pilot is converted into Wave energy. It is said that the wave cannon emissions are the nightmares that the pilot is experiencing.

I like Gradius Gaiden's Viper. It has the cool side lights
.
and the Einhander and Silver Hawk for their bird designs.
and the Silvergun for its blunt design (though the sprite is fugly).
and the Ginkei for its all-around coolness.

Raiden - It looks like a modren jet fighter, but it can also transform to a more beefier form when you collect enough powerups.
All of the Raizing cast - Seriously Raizing can make some badass WWII Planes/Hoverbikes/Medival Steampunk Ships
The Shinden from Strikers - This WWII prototype never got used in the real WWII, but it is a major player in Strikers. With a rear-propeller and sleek design, it's a vastly different design from the front engine fighters. It's ability to shed plasma copies of itself can one-hit bosses if it is strong enough.
Dodonpachi Helicopter - It's green and I always liked it's good speed and firepower.
R Series - Gotta love the bubble canopies.
And of course.... Vic Viper for obvious reasons.

For me it's the Silvergun, the Ginkei & Ikaruga and the R-9. All are beautiful and elegantly designed. Outstanding!
Ikaruga review now up in PLASMA BLOSSOM

Ikaruga - the design is very unique and original. It almost resembles a bat (when black) or a bird (when white). Pure eye candy!
Darius series - I love the hawk design. And when you develope the different color shields, it looks like you're a hawk on fire. Good stuff.
Giga Wing series - I like the way your ship does that corkscrew rotation when you turn left or right quickly. Every ship has a different shape and color, not to mention different bullet patterns. And the designs are not boring. Props to Capcom!
Strikers 1945 series - those WW2 plains are nicely detailed. I loves 'em.
Shikigami No Shiro series - I just love the idea of being a flying person, rather than being the usual ships. Very original. It's just sad that the only other shmup with this idea in mind was the extremely mediocre Sol Divide.
I want more!!!
These are my fav's.

Thanks BM

About ESP Galuda, was it only released in Japan, for the PS2?
