Looking for a good PS2 FPS...
I'm definately not looking for a war FPS; rather something that's non-fiction based.
XIII kind of appeals to me because I remember seeing a video where you have to take down a helicopter boss; and that's the only time I've ever seen a boss enemy in an FPS.
Any recommendations?

IMO Timesplitters 2 or Timesplitters 3 are pretty much the best FPS on the PS2. The graphics are superb, the humour spot on and the challenge modes are adictive as hell. I even liked the mapmaker elements.
Although people didn't seem to like it i had fun with Killzone. It isn't that great although the art & design is fantastic but if you pick it up cheap it's worth a go.
Unreal Tornament for the PS2 is pretty awful though. If your PC can handle it defenitaly pick it up, it would be as cheap as chips for the PC now.

I wasn't really a fan of Red Faction II and i completed it on my second sitting. Very short game.
Dave, Timesplitters 2 & 3 have bosses. There are tanks, choppers, 60 foot monster and others. I like the fact that you hop about in time so you could be a gunslinger in the west, a 60s spy, and a futuristic robot to name but a few. It's also made by Free Radical who are ex Rare employes. Dave Doak, the director of Free Radical was one of the men behind Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for the N64. It really is the finest shooter series available for the PS2.

In timesplitters how is the singleplayer game? I thought it was primarily good multiplayer-wise...
Does it take much time getting used to using a controller for console fps'? I was the shiznizz at pc quake III but basically have been just shit when I've briefly tried consoles fps'.
Killzone looks like my cuppa tea

Know thy enemy attack pattern.
I've played a lot of first person shooters. I've been playing First Person Shooters since before they were called first person shooters. I've played through Operation Bodycount, Corridor 7, Daikatana, Blake Stone, In Pursuit of Greed, TekWar, Witchaven, etc..you name it.. pretty much every FPS that's previously been called the worst first person shooter ever.Diabollokus wrote:What about red faction2 heard it was quite good....... then again hearsay isn't necessarily true.
With that in mind, consider this:
I feel that Red Faction 2 is the worst FPS ever.
- It does absolutly nothing right and is a pale comparison of the original (which was slightly above average; the PS2 groupies at the time hailed it as better than Half Life because they just didn't know better, kind of like the Xbox groupies that claim Halo is the best FPS ever).
- The level design is bland and generic
- The engine is clunky (on the PC it managed to run choppy on a system that ran Red Faction smooth as silk literally 5 minutes before and after, on the PS2 it's painful),
- The storyline (if you care about such things) is so. fucking. horrible. that it makes Pokemon seem like Aismov,
- The characters are bad enough that when they get killed off in the course of the storyline, you feel happier knowing that you won't have to suffer through their fucking dialogue ever again
- The last boss is cheap. Not in your typical FPS sort of way, but in the "Jesus fucking christ, they somehow found a way to make this game even less enjoyable" way
I could go on, but the game isn't worth it. I spent $10 on the PC version because I figured it couldn't be that bad... i mean, there's not too many games that aren't even worth $10, but it is to FPS as Planet Joker is to Saturn shmups.
It's fucking horrible.
Timesplitters 2's single player is a toss up. Some missions are pretty enjoyable (Tokyo and the Wild West) whereas the rest...aren't. The control bites (whoever decided on the Timesplitter's control method needs to be cockpunched), but the huge number of unlockables may interest you. If you're coming from a PC gaming background, you will not have a fun time trying to get used to Timesplitters' fucked up control scheme. bottom line.MovingTarget wrote:In timesplitters how is the singleplayer game? Also, I'm strongly anti-split screen deathmatch. Color me a spoilsport, but i just don't like the idea that my opponent can see everything I'm doing. In the PC realm, we call that "cheating".
I traded Red Faction 2 to a friend of mine after hearing a lot of positive impressions from idiots. One of the worst games I've ever played. Enemies take way too much damage to kill...
If we're talking about PC now, I don't claim to be an expert in the genre but my favourite by far is Day of Defeat, like it a lot more than its sister Counterstrike.

It's quite good, surprisingly. It even unofficially supports a usb keyboard and mouse, though you can't rebind the keys (still, it's the only way to play). The interface is slicker than the PC version and the levels have been reworked a bit to compensate for the memory in the PS2. Well worth picking up since it goes ofr like $8 at Gamestop used anymore.dementia wrote:How's the port of Deus Ex 1?

I've been hearing quite a few good things about Project Snowblind. Other than the snappy visual design, the fact that it's a Crystal Dynamics game makes me want to check it out (I've got high hopes for the next Tomb Raider game now that it's under their control instead of Core's).

When compared with:dave4shmups wrote:So with that in mind, is the control in Timesplitters 2 really that bad??
Deus Ex: The Conspiracy
Medal of Honor Frontline
Red Faction
..yes, the control is that bad.
When compared to the FPS controls for Metal Gear Solid 2: no, it's not that bad.
You COULD do worse, though. The PS2 port of Soldier of Fortune was a swift kick to the nuts for anyone that enjoyed the PC version (and anyone who spent money on the PS2 version), Medal of Honor: Rising Sun somehow managed to be even worse than Breakthrough and Spearhead, it's a wonder that Goldeneye:Rogue Agent ever got released being as bad as it is (it's no Red Faction 2, though)....uh...god...head hurts...
It's sad, but I play bad games just to make the good games seem even better

The port of No One Lives Forever wasn't too hot either (Jupiter made a smoother transition to Xbox than Lithtech did to PS2). Not sure if I'd suggest picking it up on the cheap or not, especially considering how inexpensive you can pick up both of the PC games for these days (and let's all pretend that Contract JACK never happened)
I actually really enjoyed XIII on Xbox, it's difficult and has a slightly N64 feel to it that reminded me a lot of Goldeneye, where it abviously takes a lot of inspiration from (the snow levels in particular) I hear it controls a little sloppier for PS2, but haven't played it so can't say for sure. The helicopter boss is pretty cool as well, though there are a few bosses that are just standard enemies with energy bars which always feels kinda cheap. Highly reocmmended, especially at the price it can be had for now.XIII kind of appeals to me because I remember seeing a video where you have to take down a helicopter boss; and that's the only time I've ever seen a boss enemy in an FPS.

Deus Ex actually ported very well, despite what PC snobs would have you believe. And I just started Snowblind for Xbox, nothing earth-shattering, but a nice, solid FPS with superb controls and great guns. Deus Ex with the RPG'y bits turned down and the shooting turned up.How's the port of Deus Ex 1?

Oh man, if you want to include 3rd person games that play like first person shooters, then Freedom Fighters is a MUST OWN. Dirt cheap and amazingly badass. IOI can't pump out the sequel fast enoughTWITCHDOCTOR wrote:Like the others have alreay said, but include this one as well...
its a 3rd person(view from behind)
KillSwitch by Namco. I own the Xbox version, but I'm sure its still quite good on the PS2.

I picked up Project Snowblind thinking it would be like Deus Ex 1 & 2. (Project Snowblind started out being a spinoff called Deus Ex: Clan Wars). Turns out while this game looks semi-impressive, it has no challenge and no replay value. It's extremely short, mindless, linear, and has no difficulty levels at all. And while it tries to go for the Deus Ex art style it fails to be one tenth of the quality game of Deus Ex 1 & 2. Project Snowblind = Rental.captain ahar wrote:Project Snowblind was fun from what i played. and it controls pretty nicely given that the Ps2 is shit for the genre. on top of that the powers can be a blast, as well. much respect to Crystal Dynamics for the graphic style.
Area 51 is another similar game coming soon though... that also has some ex-Ion Storm staff working on it, including some Deus Ex guys. It looks to improve over Snowblind in every way.
