Shmups on XBL...i wish

Post by Phil12 »

I wonder when they'll ever come out with half decent shmups for Xbox Live Arcade.

Well, MS decided they don't want any more shmups or any other arcade games on XBLA, so probably never.

Then again, companies like G.Rev or Treasure could program from scratch their own video games and shmups, unless Microsoft went completely anti-shmup (news which I've yet to see) and anti-Japanese-developer-that-isn't-Capcom-SquareEnix-or-Konami.

Citation needed. Ikaruga was the most popular 360 title period (download or otherwise) for a stretch there, so I'm not sure where you're getting this.

As for the thread subject, I have no idea what you are talking about. There are good shmups on XBLA, and I expect there will be more decent titles coming.

Yeah, i forgot about Ikaruga. But Ikaruga is pretty mainstream game. Shmups in general aren't.
Let's face it, most "mainstream" gamers hate shmups.

The Arcade is all about accessibility and putting the most cheap and unfair game on the planet on XBL just because a bunch of Wapanese idiots wish it so is asinine for their business strategy. It would bomb since no one fires up the Arcade and plays a game that is this cheaply difficult for 10 hours just to beat the first level.

Complete waste of time. Games like this were designed solely to suck the quarters out of people's pockets at arcades, not to be played at home where fun is a real factor and not the high score.

That says nothing about them not wanting any shmups. "Cutting down" is not necessarily "cutting out," and that does not remove the possibility of original XBLA shmups.

So, what do you do? Can you convince a nation that's been so raised on shiny graphics and unlockables that take up half the disc space to play shmups because they're fun? Your quote already proved that one. :)

MS said they wanted to cut back on arcade ports.

How does this translate to MS outright hating shmups? I know I'd be happier if devs started making new shmups for the system. As opposed to expecting me to buy Trigger Heart Excelica again, or Ikaruga again, or my nth version of Xevious or Scramble, etc.

Maybe the possible project RS-3 will change things up in the shmup market.

I found Ikaruga, Trigger Heart Exelica and Omega Five to be quality shoot 'em ups.

The OP could have been referring to the recently rejected Cave shooters, but he was only curious about "half decent" shooters, not good ones. Apparently.

Ohhh, that was a close one. I thought he might have meant the others by 5pb.
