According to gamefront, TAITO recently renewed protection of it's rights to the Darius trademark/rights.
This means for future use I think. So will they come up with a new installment of the "Large Fish" saga?
Certainly hope so.
As long as they don't make it download only I'll be thrilled.

That would be sweet... only hope they don't screw everything up and make a crap-ass game with pretty graphics and nothing else. Many companies have been doing shitty "revivals" of their classic games lately

I'll be if I see the revival of the three-screen gameplay the first 2 Dariuses had...except with 3D graphics (or 2D graphics beautifully designed like all Cave games).
Considering that both the G-Darius and G-Darius Ver. 2 PCBs were the very last two arcade PCBs to be released in 1997, it's about damn time that Taito released another true sequel worthy of the G-Darius lineage...
And does Darius-R for the GBA count as part of the Darius universe or not?

Darius-R for the GBA probably isn't canon with the series timeline. Though obviously based on Darius 1, I'd say it's a very loose adaptation. Some Darius Gaiden and G.Darius BGM makes it in there, although the vocals are stripped from "Visionnerz" in this case.
Hopefully Taito has a good team ready to work on this. I wouldn't mind G.Rev for a hired developer here.

I'm actually hoping for this. G.Rev has proven themselves already. And now it's time for them to blow our minds with a new Darius, with insanely acid-trippy level designs and some crazy huge bosses.

Also, there are some former Taito and Zuntata members in that group, so if anything, the atmosphere of Darius, even though it may not be exactly the same as before, will at least be there.
The soundtrack should be great. I just hope they keep it in the same tradition as the music from the previous Darius games, and not make a house/trance soundtrack.

As long as Zuntata does the soundtrack, I'll be hapy
