I know the 2D sequel to Rayforce has been mentioned on here...IIRC Chimera Beast was never actually released either (though you can play it). There was also some unreleased PS1 shmup that someone put up a topic for not TOO long ago...

Was enough ever heard of Axelay 2 for it to count?

I had heard of a R-Type clone on Dreamcast, there were a few screenshots somewhere with awesome 3D rendered graphics (one of these shots showing the level 2 brown monsters of R-Type 1), but impossible to remember the name...

Homebrew or commercial game ? I have no idea.

Last Hope? This is a homebrew game that's sold commercially. Never played it. But I think you can still buy it on their homepage. Just google "Last Hope Dreamcast"

I would trade Arbalester for it...even if the system is still messed up, it looks better, at least. The canyon scene reminds me of Daioh/Shienryu.

NATIVE for the Jaguar was one of the most promising prototypes/demos I've ever seen.

Shame there wasn't a full product in the end. :(

small (VERY impressive) boss showcase here:

http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=OAkbSa4jNOM

google your way to more and impressive clips.

kind of the official page for this game. A playable demo is available at least...

Obviously Plutos and Sirus for Atari 7800. There's a number of others for other classic systems, as well. Atari 2600 has discovered stuff stuff like Lasercade, Pleiades, Meteoroids, Xevious, Ewok Adventure, Sinistar, and Tempest. Atari 5200 has Xevious and Tempest protos, and a shit ton of rumormill stuff for all of those pre-crash machines was also announced.

It was almost completed. There is a leaked beta of it floating around the net, as well as a translation patch.

Note that on their page it says those are Concept Videos .. aka pre-rendered. No way the Jaguar could put that kind of stuff out in real-time. You can really tell the mantis is pre-rendered.

You'd be surprised with what it CAN do... seriously.
This was a machine with a LOT of potential. AvP showed a bit but this showed it even more imo.

Shame I don't own a cd add on though. :(

Which is a problem, why???
As long as it operates as smoothely as it does here I don't see any problem. Still very impressive in-game stuff!

No, i don't talk about Last Hope which has 2D drawn graphics and has been formely created for the Neo Geo before it got Dreamcast port.

It's actually not in-game I guess. It looks rather like a pre-rendered movie from a sideview angle to make it looks like a real game. Just look how shakily the ship moves in that video, it doesn't look very playable.

Is there anything else you know about this? When and where did you hear about it etc.

The Atari Jag flash cart demo of Native seriously ROCKS!

That unreleased PSX shmup title that you mention of is none other than Rabid Entertainment's Violent Seed prototype shmup game -- Acclaim was supposed to publish it for USA PSX distribution back in late 1997 or early 1998 tentative release date... ^_~

-------------------------

Native was shown in it's single stage demo entirety at the World of Atari '98 Expo in Las Vegas back in the summer of 1998. Duranik Software was kind enough to bring a notebook PC + debugging Jaguar console and a Jaguar flash cart to show it off. I was personally asked if I wanted to try it out and I agreed. I was in shmup heaven upon seeing the opening credits leading into the first stage...I was fucking blown away by what I saw and was playing (essentially a kick-ass rendered R-Type clone with different gameplay mechanics and power-ups). ^_~

It had BGM tunes playing the background -- this Jaguar shmup demo was THE shit! You could even play against the praying mantis boss at the end of the stage! Native's rendered graphics game demo that was shown at the WOA'98 event was truly some special stuff for the Jaguar...if it was released, it would've been released in Jaguar cart format... ^_~

You can play the Jaguar Native demo (but without the cool BGM tunes though + not able to play the cool praying manits end-stage boss either) with a Jag Bypass CD cartridge. Songbird Productions provided the cool Jaguar CD Native demo if you have such a required Jag cart to play it with... ^_~

I tried this Native demo on my Jag CD setup with a Japanese 21-pin RGB cable setup on my XRGB-2 and it is,indeed, a short & sweet shmup demo -- although not as sweet as being able to play the "full-fledged" Native demo in flash cart form at the WOA'98 event...

Tis such a shame that the Native demo was never finished beyond it's single stage demo -- it would've kicked the living shit outta both Jag Raiden and Jag Trevor McFur in the Cresent Galaxy shmup games any ol' day had it been finished... ^_~

There where of course a lot of unreleased shmups on the C64, what with the homebrew scene and all. You can see some of them here. Most look rather bland:

It is powerup of laser.

It probably would've been a huge turd had it ever been released

I wonder how quickly the game would've switched from regular gameplay to that sprite.

Arcade

"Kyuukouka Bakugekitai" by Konami

"Side Effect" (The game was like an opposite version of Konami's Gyruss?) by Taito

"Charon (or Karon)" (I vaguely remember that it was vertical shmup) by Sega

"Soar Knight" (prototype hori-shmup on NeoGeo) by an unknown company

Does Deep Blue count? It should.
Zebra Airforce wrote:Variant Schwanzer
That really does look great. The description makes it sound like it would've been unique for the time, had it been completed.
BulletMagnet wrote:Was enough ever heard of Axelay 2 for it to count?
Except for the mention of "AXELAY 2 COMING SOON!" after the credits for completing the original twice on Hard, nothing. Apparently the project was dropped because Axelay didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel.

Wasn't Sonic Team handling this one... or am I thinking of something else (possibly some keetai game)?

Adding Kizuna Jigokutachi Ketsui for PS2.

I saw Charon in a magazine, the game might have been shown at AM show in 1989 but Sega didn't release after all. It had unique option system.

As for Soar Knight, the game was crap. It was like mech version of Deep Blue (PC-Engine) I don't remember the name of the company, almost nameless.
