Yuke Chikidate from Asobi Seksu has a pretty amazing voice that I never really apprieciated until I saw them live. It manages to sound both fragile and very powerful at the same time, and I love the way her accent veers from new york to Japanese depending on what language she's singing in.
Eva Spence from Rollo Tomassi has one of the best voices for grindcore ever. Not what most people would consider beautiful, but nm. The fact she was like 17 when they started makes it all the more impressive. In fact, seeing that voice come out a young woman was one of the most striking moments of my life. Remarkable.
Although it's not often he sings this way, I would actually mention Ronnie James Dio for male singers. He sings like an angel during the intro of "The Sign of The Southern Cross," from Black Sabbath's Mob Rules LP. My favourite female singer tends to be Stevie Nicks.

You ever heard a live performance of hers? I have an evanescence concert from London or something, she sounds absolutely terrible live. I'm sure the studio takes are a massive composite.ARCADIA wrote: female, Amy Lee
Compare to Within Temptation, who have a similar style, but she can ROCK it live ... check it out...

Yep. This program called Melodyne which fixes pitches (I use it in my own music as well) is apparently used on most commercial songs now, even on good singers. They must slam the crap out of her with it though.Lordstar wrote:yup! Live shes rougher than a dogs arse. hell I could sound like Ms Lee with some excelent producing.
So no, she does not have the most beautiful voice, even though it sounds OK on the albums (still not amazing). I do love their music though

End of Thread.
On a slightly more serious note, on the female end of things I've always preferred a nice alto voice to most squeaky sopranos...offhand I like Sade's voice, as well as Judy Collins and maybe Karen Carpenter, if you want to go back even further.

In recent times (because if we allow people like the Sinatras and all the old jazz singers then this list is gonna be really short),
Van Hunt - people are calling him the New Prince - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XtaeCU3svI
Eric Roberson - there aren't too many good soul singers anymore, but this guy is pretty good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qro3Q0hx1T0
Maaya Sakamoto - one of the few female japanese singers whose voice can actually stand alone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTIo9fWmpcU
