Have you played these two Xevious hack?

1. Great Xevious
2. Xevious Plus!

might be worth playing.

And wasn't there a Namco produced Xevious Arrangement PCB as well?

It's featured on the PSX Xevious 3D+G compliation disc for posterity... ^_~
