Donpachi versions, ....mame?

Post by dpful »

Are there some different versions of donpachi or is it slow in mame?

I have played the PCB, and during the 2nd level, those ships shoot the strings of bullets at you fast!

I played it in mame and it didn't seem so-- although everything else seemed pretty normal, so I thought maybe the tweaked a version (I think it was the european version).

I know mame has speed issues sometimes, but it just seemed that those cheap ass fast bullets were the only thing slowed down.

I think the rank is softer in some versions? There was a thread about this in strategy not too long ago, iirc.

Here.

The japanese version is much harder than the US version. Not only you get less bullets in the US version but you also get full bomb stock at the end of each level.

the japanese version is much more enjoyable.

Not only that, bullets are much slower in the US version.

I hear the Korea and Hong Kong versions are even tougher than the Japan version. Never played either of them myself.

Iirc, Alien Soldier told me that the first-level boss has a better attack in the Japanese version. I have the Japanese PCB and that's what I'm currently playing-- just started yesterday in fact.

The US version is the easiest. The bullets are slightly slower and you get a full set of bombs after each level. Still, 2-4 and 2-5 aren't that easy to finish on this version.

The Japanese and Korean versions are exactly the same except for one 1-1 and 2-1 boss attack. This attack is pretty meaningless as well.

The Hong Kong version is by far the hardest of the versions. Finishing both loops of this version is probably as hard as a 2-all in ketsui or doj. The safe spots that work in the other three versions have been removed and some enemies bullets move way faster. So fast in fact, it seems like they instantly hit you.

is this all a joke?
so versions like the U.S versions are just for losers?

Maybe should mention this in the hi-score thread :?

Has anyone even 2-all'd this version? I would love to see how insane 2-5 and 2-6 get.

The USA version of donpachi is not that easy to 2-all. I don't think it matters all that much for the high score thread what version people use. The extra bombs in the USA version help people easily get through 2-1 to 2-3, but stage 2-4 is still annoying. What usually happens is someone dies trying to save bombs for the hard part of the stage and then all those extra bombs are gone for good.

No one I know of has 2-all'd the HK version of donpachi. In fact, my replay only gets to 1-5. If I had lots of time to practice, I might get to 2-4 but it gets pretty hopeless at that point. As I said earlier, the hiding spots don't work and everything is unfotunately more difficult. Unlike the other versions, stage 2-5 is much harder than 2-4 (in the USA/KOR/JP versions 2-4 and 2-5 are about the same in difficulty, with 2-4 being slightly more difficult).

I'd say otherwise. Even if it's still difficult to 2-ALL, the US version is easier to survive and score better in the first loop. That alone is an unfair advantage over the people who play other versions.

Maybe I should talk to stuminator about this, and suggest him to make separate boards.

1-4 is a lot easier than 1-5 imo
I wouldn't know about loop 2 version though

I've nobombed through most of 1-4 without really planning anything out one time

can't say the same for 1-5 lol

Also, anyone who can clear loop 1 in US version should be able to do the same on Jap version. The bomb stock difference doesn't really matter yet. Only a difference of like, 4 per stage lol (since you reset to 3 bombs when dying no matter what version, so difference is only in stage bomb restock)

On loop 2 it starts to matter because loop 2 is not as easy to learn lol

On the Japanese version, you can bomb large enemies, and then shoot them after, and receive a bomb back.. on the US version, the enemy just dies, and you receive no bomb. This is really useful on 2-3.

The game is quite hard to 2-ALL, no matter which version you play.. I guess I could have finished it, if I wasn't trying to score well when playing.

lol the segments I've been to are pretty straightforward

And I haven't actually bothered with savestate practice like I have on other games lol

2-4 and 2-5 should be pretty ugly though, considering how much of difficulty increase the other loop 2 stages have
the other stages are straightforward
