PSX pad hacking quick Q's
Hi guys, quick question. Do I *HAVE* to daisy chain (in series) the ground connections for the buttons (hacking a psx pcb) or can I connect them all to one ground? Also, i can't tell which wire is ground for the joystick. on my stock hrap 1 i see that each of the five wires is labeled 1 through 5. is 1 ground or 5?

I assume you are talking about a Playstation compatible joystick. If that is the case then it has a common ground and you can wire it as you see fit. I generally wire all grounds of the switches and buttons in a daisy-chain and then connect that circuit to the ground on the hacked PCB. Of course you can wire every button or switch to an individual ground point on the PCB but that's a pain because you have a small area to solder to, or you have to scrape the black stuff off in the case of official Sony pads. As far as other controllers go I believe most use common grounds but some, like XBox 360, have separate grounds for the triggers and the guide button IINM.
There is a lot of good information about this in the pad hacking thread over on the SRK forum.

hey thanks bitkid.
daisy chaining is easier you're right. i did it after i thought about what you said, hah.
i actually did consult the padhack guides of srk at first (very informative), but i was a noob so i still made a post
.
anyway, i'm pleased to report what once was a useless hrap is now a most useful tool!
yay.
the directions on my joystick were actually swapped so i just rotated the mounting on the joystick and voila, solved
.
now to figure out a way to get the plug into the box but out again... i think i'll have to cut a hole or something.
