Do I really need my GameCube?
Do I really need my GameCube?
I've been thinking, lately, that my GameCube just seems to be going to waste. I honestly cannot remember the last time I used it. I've got a fair number of games for it, but none of them ever get used.
This time last year I also had a similar urge to sell off some of my stuff. I regret a few of those sales, but none of it was undoable. And the thing about the GameCube is, I really wouldn't be completely eliminating the possibility of playing most of these games again. The large majority of the games could be bought on the Dreamcast, or, if and when I get one, a PS2.
The only exclusive game that I might really miss is Paper Mario 2. If I do sell my GC, I definitely have to sit down and finally beat it. I've been at the beginning of the final dungeon for months now.
There's practically nothing on the horizon that really gets my juices flowing. And I could really use the cash. In the short run to cover upcoming prom expenses (damned high school), but I'll also need some money for college. The cash from the GC wouldn't go far, but it couldn't hurt, either.
PS - If any of you are interested, speak up. I'd probably sell the thing in the trading forum, if I knew there were interested parties it would probably sway my decision one way or the other.

I had a Gamecube, had all the 'must have' games, still sold it. PS2 is ridiculously better, has better ports of a lot of what's on Saturn (talking about PSX here), lots of good exclusive games, shmups and non, and in general is just better all around. RE4 is getting ported to it too (really the only reason I'm interested in this game is because people claim it's different from other resident evil games). Xbox has Outrun 2, and Street fighter anniversary collection with online. Only two games, but both good enough reasons to buy the console individually. I'd be willing to bet Counterstrike has a lot less hackers than on PC too (I'll report once I get a mouse and keyboard adapter for Xbox).
Yeah, Skies of Arcadia Legend is one of the few compelling reasons to keep my GC. I could just go back to playing the Dreamcast version, but man, it'd be tough.Ganelon wrote:Reasons I got a GC:

Yeah, I don't find much use for it either but hell if I'm gonna give up the only consoles SOA Legends is one.
Hahaha, Ganelon, I have 50% more games than j00! I have those two plus Tales of Symphonia. Except I've had Tales since release, and Skies since.... before I bought my cube 2 years ago or so, and I've never played either of them... I hardly even play Iky anymore as I could play a better one on Dreamcast, in VGA mode.
I still keep my GameCube around though, it's just nice to have around on the off-chance I'll actually have 30 sessions each with 2 hours of contiguous play time during which I can sit down and enjoy an RPG...

No love for Paper Mario 2, Pikmin 1/2, Super Smash Bros., Metroid Prime 1/2, Animal Crossing, or Wind Waker? The GCN Fire Emblem is coming soon. It got high ratings on Famitsu and sounds extremely promising.

Yeah, I got SOAL before buying my GC as well to avoid missing it (too bad the DC music quality sounds better).
Just got GC Ikaruga because I found it for $20 new shipped from Best Buy.
And I actually have the EXACT SAME number of games as you since I also got...um, Batman Vengeance.
Don't ask; found it for $5 new and as a big Batman fan, felt there was nothing to lose (boy was I wrong...). No chance I'm getting Batman Dark Tomorrow though...or is there?
As an RPG and mild Tales fan, I would've gotten Tales of Symphonia even though I hated it when I tried it if not for the fact that I wanted to see whether the PS2 version would be better and released in the US. Looks like I'll have to pick the GC version sometime since that doesn't seem to be the case. I too will never get around to actually playing the game though...

I happen to like Mario Kart Double Dash quite a bit... although it's probably one of those things I'd just have around in case people come over, since shooters aren't the friendliest games for most people (indeed, they'll probably look at me funny).
I haven't bought it yet since it's been priced at $70 CDN for-****ing-ever.

I'm contemplating the same as alpha. I only have three games for the system (Ikaruga, Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX) and I can't remember the last time I played it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I miss the days of quality Batman games. Most of the recent ones make me sad. I wish Sunsoft or Konami still had the rights to Batman games.Ganelon wrote: And I actually have the EXACT SAME number of games as you since I also got...um, Batman Vengeance.Don't ask; found it for $5 new and as a big Batman fan, felt there was nothing to lose (boy was I wrong...). lol! It took me 50-odd hrs to finish Tales of symphonia and whilst i enjoyed every minute of it, the chances of me having such time to invest into a game again are slim to say the least.iatneH wrote:I still keep my GameCube around though, it's just nice to have around on the off-chance I'll actually have 30 sessions each with 2 hours of contiguous play time during which I can sit down and enjoy an RPG...
I love RPG's, but they just take up too much time(and i have so little nowadays) to make them worth purchasing.

Definitely, Sunsoft and Konami actually made some games with decent gameplay. I remember how amazing Revenge of the Joker looked on the NES (even if it wasn't that amazing gameplay-wise). Konami's Adventures of Batman & Robin on the SNES is actually my fave Batman game, followed by Sunsoft's Batman on the Genesis.BrianC wrote: I miss the days of quality Batman games. I can't believe how people write off the GC so easily. I like it almost as much as my good old DC. Seriously, it aces the N64 in content (some games listed I don't own):
Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 not to mention 3 and the upcoming Joe melee fighter, P.N.07 (which I NEED to buy) SSB:M, TWO Zelda adventures not to mention the co-op Zelda games, possibly TWO Mario adventures assuming 128 still isn't for Rev, Paper Mario 2, Soul Calibur 2, Metal Gear The Twin Snakes, Megaman Anniversary Pack, Sonic collection, new Sonic Adv with Shadow, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, import shooters like Shikigami and Chaos Field. Not to mention nice extras like the Gameboy player and the surprisignly addictive Pacman Vs. which me and my buddies play almost as much as old school Bomberman.
Sure it doesn't have a zillion 3rd party games every month to choose from, but considering how much better it is than the N64's lineup I'm not complaining. But I guess since i have about 15 + systems I don't need that many extra games anyways. *shrugs*

The GC lineup is looking a bit dry at the moment (although I passed up trying Metroid Prime 2 and Resident Evil 4). I think I've only bought one GC game in the last year or so (Pikmin 2, which is excellent). Still, I can't imagine giving up the system, because there's a handful of games for it that are among the best ever, and I'd always want to be able to play them.
Hehe, there's almost no exclusives in that list. The ones that are are boring like Metroid Prime.Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 not to mention 3 and the upcoming Joe melee fighter, P.N.07 (which I NEED to buy) SSB:M, TWO Zelda adventures not to mention the co-op Zelda games, possibly TWO Mario adventures assuming 128 still isn't for Rev, Paper Mario 2, Soul Calibur 2, Metal Gear The Twin Snakes, Megaman Anniversary Pack, Sonic collection, new Sonic Adv with Shadow, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, import shooters like Shikigami and Chaos Field. Sounds like me. I have Metroid Prime, Ikaruga and Super Monkey Ball. I'm going to hang on to it for the new Zelda game, plus I want to get a copy of that Zelda 64 re release that has Ura Zelda on it.Ghegs wrote:I'm contemplating the same as alpha. Feedback will set you free.

Chaos Field is a semi-exclusive and many of those non exclusives are still worth getting for GCN. I wasn't impressed by Twin Snakes, though. Metroid Prime is a well designed game that isn't designed too be an all out action game. It's a good mix of action, exploration, and puzzles. It's meant to be a Metroid game, not a straight up FPS. Again, the fact that many of these games are not exclusives doesn't mean they aren't worth getting. Some non-exculsives have very good versions on GameCube.Neon wrote:Hehe, there's almost no exclusives in that list. i have considered selling mine as well. but as Resident Evil 4 on PS2 is going to be gutted (so i've heard), i've already bought Ikaruga on GC and don't use VGA, and Killer 7 is coming out soon. plus the new Zelda looks pretty cool and i still want to play Chaos Field eventually ( i know its on DC too).
I have no sig whatsoever.

Aside from In the Hunt, the Pachis, and Layer Section 2, I'm really racking my brain on what exactly else you could possibly be talking about. Sonic Wings Special and Strikers 1945 II have such minimal differences that it doesn't matter... and other than that there are no 2D fighters/shmups that are better on the PS1/PS2 (and I highly doubt the puzzle game arena really has anything either for either console as far as "better versions" go)... there aren't THAT many 3D games that are worth mentioning that are on both consoles (if any)... and... thats it. Both systems mostly rely on exclusives... but port wise me thinks its fairly obvious which console somewhat dominated... (Dead or Alive, Tomb Raider, Doom(JP), Powerslave(I think?), Souky, Darius Gaiden, Strikers 1945, Thunder Force V, Gunbird, etc.).
At any rate, I apologize for the digression alpha. So let me address the initial question:
I would say don't sell the GC just yet. Granted, this is somewhat hypocritical of me since I sold mine a long ass time ago, but I'm really regreting it these days. Resident Evil 4 is always going to be worlds better on the GC, the new Zelda game looks great, Paper Mario 2 is great, F-Zero is great, Tales of Symphonia is excellent...
There's just a lot of reasons to own a GC. I guess you just have to look around a bit.
But in all honesty, I'd say hold on to it until E3, if nothing shown there impresses you, sell it. It'll be super cheap this time next year anyways.

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
They're all more or less equivalent, if we're going to say the differences in strikers 2 are 'minimal.' but the Saturn versions usually have downsampled sound effects, so I usually just get all the non-exclusives for PS2. I doubt the differences between ps2 and saturn gunbird are very different...I know they're not in Thunderforce 5 (PSX has no slowdown, one minor graphic removed), I'm sure Strikers is more or less the same on both consoles minus probable sound issues on Saturn. Same for Sexy Parodius, Salamander Deluxe (the transparencies in 2 are probably MIA on Saturn) etc. etc.Aside from In the Hunt, the Pachis, and Layer Section 2, I'm really racking my brain on what exactly else you could possibly be talking about. Admittedly this is a highly generalized view of it, and for the games I really like I'll own both ports anyways. So maybe I'll report back in a few years
