walkthrough on how to calibrate monitor in new astro city

Post by jonny5 »

im getting a sega new astro city cab in a few weeks and when i hooked up my ESP Ra.De board to it it had some geometry issues....the guy selling it said i just had to fiddle with the levels....

he will help me get it right but id like to have a reference for the future if i have to do it myself down the line

ive never calibrated an arcade monitor before so it would be awesome if somebody could either point me in the direction of a good walkthrough or make me one...

im just apprehensive of fiddling with knobs and not knowing what does what and how to get it to look right....i dont want to make it worse....lol

a video would be great...

thanx

Not to crush any dreams here, but arcade monitors are not PC monitors, and will never have perfect geometry. People don't realize this until the own a cabinet, and scrutinize every single pixel of the display like a PC.

Given that, I hope what you are calling geometry problems are simply adjustments for H+V size, linearity (unlikely) or trapezoid/pincushion, otherwise there isn't much you can do.

Real arcade monitor calibration is done in the factory with professional equipment, and involves adjusting yoke positioning and RGB ring alignment. Don't even try to mess with this stuff on your own or it will get so out of wack you may never get it back to looking even halfway decent.

As for common monitor adjustment, details are in the official New Astro City Manual (see page 19+20). Its the same monitor controls for regular Astro and Astro 2. You may want to download it for safe keeping.

thanx for your response Dave.K

i realize it wont be perfect....

perhaps i should reword my question....

im unclear the function and effect of each dial.....so i am unsure which to adjust to fix the problems....i meant to take my camera so i could get some pictures....

i may be using the wrong terms but when i said geometry issues i simply meant that the screen is kinda warpy towards the top....like not distortion so much as if i had messed with the screen settings....

i guess i will take pics if the guy selling it cant figure it out....he seemed to think it would be a simple quick fix.....it displayed fine with his Mr. Driller PCB

and hopefully that link will prove useful....its in english which helps cuz the manual that comes with the cab is japanese

any other tips would be most appreciated

Page 19+20 of the Astro manual (linked above) is what you want then, as it lists what each monitor control does with a little diagram/picture.
