i remember someone posting on this board that Gradius V was easy because there was no option thief... turns out it not true. i was playing it last night, power-up all the way as i do. i 1-lifed all the way to the final corridor that leads into the area for the vertical walker boss in stage 4(?). and an option thief swoops in and steals all my options. i proceeded to lose all my lives i had collected up to that point (3 or 4 extras) because i couldn't cope with all the shit flying at me.
oh, and to landshark: i have always been a bit biased towards the laser (except for blasting Moais), and after reading your post about the effectiveness of Spread Bomb and Laser. i must say it really does have a knack for killing things. i've also taken to Edit for E. Laser on bosses and Double during the stage.
Just wait until stage 6 thats an amazing stage, one of my favourites from any shmup. In fact level 4 5 and 6 are all amazing. I think the spiderrodbotinaveritcalcorridor boss your talking about is the end of stage 3.
well there is stage 1 - Ring Boss, stage 2 - Destroy the Eye, stage 3 - Boss Rush, stage 4 - Vertical Walker.
that was my logic anyway. apparently after looking around a bit, Boss Rush is considered part of stage 2. oh well.
shameful to say, but i have seen all the stages. i played through the whole game on very easy (using multiple credits cause i am a loser) so i could get Weapon Edit.
and that goo pisses me off, still can't figure out how to deal at the very end where the stage rotates to form the vert shaft.
IIRC, Option Hunter shows up every 768 seconds once you collected all options. Keep your boss fights in stage 1 and 2 longer, you will have easier time to deal with that damn thing in stage 3.
Everytime I see that thing I go completely kamikazee trying to avoid it. Thus its never been able to grab emm off me yet as I been too quick for it(as in I fly into something and die before it can nick the options ) Does it take all your options or just one? If it took just one I might be able to refrain from flying into walls in avoidance of it next time.

I played this game for the first time in months last night, and I tried that technique. Vertical double for the stages and E. Laser for the bosses. Its killer wonder how the double will cope with the acid though??? Think I'll go and try that in a few minutes. Its ok using the codes for stage practice right? Stage 4 was a piece of piss with type 1 and vert double(and spread bomb).

Option Hunter takes every option it can get its jaws on.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
I've actually found Option Hunter is easier to deal with in Gradius V than in other titles, at least if you have the right Option types availble. Types 1, 3, and 4 can evade the Hunter fairly easily.
Type-1:Clump your Options together by flying against one of the screen edges, or just keep moving back and forth rapidly until your Options are all clumped together with your ship. Lock them in place with R1 and simply move out of the Hunter's path.
Type-3:Use R1 to change Option distance as needed. You can either widen a gap so that the Hunter flies through it, or just close up formation and move as far up/down from it as possible.
Type-4:Put em into rotate mode with R1, this should keep them close enough, and then you can just quickly move out of the way.
Sadly, since Type-2's formation can't be manipulated with the R1 button, you'll have to evade Option Hunter the old fashioned way.
YOU ARE APPROACHING THE TARGET OF ATTACK! THE MISSION STARTS NOW! ARE YOU READY?!

the only doubles i have ever been able to use effectively are the Back Shot and Above-Forward variety. i can't stand the vert double so you have my respect for trying (as if you were looking )
also i imagine that the Hunter would be easier to deal with (with Option Freeze especially). i was just pissed that it surprised me.
