Hype - MSX shmup

Post by Shatterhand »

I've been wanting to make a review of this game to submit it for the site for a long time, but as the main site haven't been updated for ages, I never did it.

This has always been on my yearly top 25 list, it's among the most obscure titles that appear on those lists for sure. It's a very unknown MSX 1 shmup, it's very unknown even among MSX users.

I just found a video of it, so I would like to share with you guys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0qNwuANesg

It's a very simplistic game, but the action is at a blazing speed, and non-stop. There are no bosses, no complicated bullet patterns, no cut-scene between levels (The action doesn't even stop between levels) and the background is just some stars. All this is compensated with the non-stop action and smart enemy placement which makes this an adrenalin-pumping shmup.

It deserved to be more known. You guys should give it a go, even more if you are a fan of old-school shmup action.

Cool looking 8-bit game- its the sort of game i'd have spent hours playing when I was a kid.

Woops, commented the vid but not in here:
Watch out: behind you! Flying cashews and cheese curls!

Not much in the way of graphics, which is a shame, but the technical aspects of it look pretty nice! I should write this to a disk and play it on my MSX sometime.

Looks great. In some way it reminds me of Space Disorder.

Wow! That game looks really awesome. The variety of enemy types is nice and their unique patterns are pretty cool, especially when there are 2 or 3 types on screen at one time. Seems far more sophisticated than something like Sky Jaguar, for instance (not that Sky Jaguar isn't a fine game).

Fun fact: Space Disorder development begun as a remake of Hype. :) You can still see a lot from Hype in Space Disorder.

And this video doesn't show even half of the enemies. New enemies keep showing up up until about zone 10.

Look at the thread I reveal Space Disorder to the world:

I had already mentioned the Hype influence :)
