PS3 Gran Turismo V Prologue out today 4/16/08 in USA

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I'm surprised that SCEA finally released it's PS3 release of Gran Turismo V Prologue with a cool new Blu-Ray exclusive "Beyond the Apex" documentary -- a behind the scenes HD feature of the GT (gaming) franchise today on April 16th, 2008...

It's about damn time...and it supports up to 1080p output on those cool HDTV monitors.

Plus it has support for the new PS3 Dual Shock 3 controllers are priced at $54.99 USD. Only if Sony had included such a Dual Shock 3 controller from the get go at it's November 2006 USA launch...which means I would have to shell out more cash for one. I already have two PS3 Six Axis controllers. Oh well, I guess it's time to bite the bullet and get one to see just how good it is with GT5-P...

I got word from my local Gamestop that on May 20th, 2008, they'll be getting in the newest Logitech GT steering wheel setup for use with GT5-P -- very pricey indeed! I think I'll just use my current PS2 console based Logitech Driving Force setup for now..... ^_~

It's tempting to buy this just because I have a g25 wheel but I'll wait for that legendary damage patch...if it ever comes out.

Damage is a necessity in racing games these days.

My friend's band is supposed to have a song in this game. I don't imagine I'll ever play it though...

For the noob,

One of the conditions that the car manufacturers insisted was no damage to their virtual cars in the GT franchise and Digital Polyphony honors it.
But I've seen such "real-time" car deformation occur on the PSX platform with some racing titles from Code Masters. If they can do it, yeah why not the same damage with the GT franchise? Sure, it would be more realistic and if it needed be, just drive the damage car or tow it to the pit lane area and get it fixed up (just like in real racing events). It's shouldn't be that hard to implement, right?

So the Logitech Driving Force G25 steering wheel is already out? That's awesome! I'll bet that it set you back a pretty penny & worth every penny too... ^_~

For PaCrappa,

And what's your friend's band's name on the GT5-P game? That's cool that SCEA would feature them on it... ^_~

I have the JP version of GT5:P. I learned not to buy the US versions of GT after GT4 with its butchered intro movie("Panama" instead of "Moon over the Castle"? - I am not amused).

I doubt Polyphony will release a damage patch for GT5:P, or any other patch for that matter. They`ll be fools to update GT5:P with even more cars, tracks and features than it already has. They`ll marginalize GT5 Proper if they do so.

I think damage is pretty hard to implement with the amount of cars that GT series is known for slinging around. However, many car sim makers go the extra mile and do it anyway even though it's assload of hard work. That said, you can't accuse PD of laziness when they've included such beautiful incar views.

Oh yeah and I agree that the G25 was worth it. It's also very cheap compared to what hardcore PC sim racers spend on a wheel...

Why would anyone pay $300 for a used shmup on a dead console?
$40 is the right price for anyone willing to pay it.

Why would anyone pay for PGR4? It looks like ass and there isn`t a single decent wheel for the 360 to play it with.

Who cares about wheels????

Playing through controllers > wheels.

Check world tournaments for that fact too.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Prologue is actually a great sim. It might not be exciting most of the time but its a damn fine piece of software. I've put many hours into it and sometimes it felt tedious, but on occasion when you find the right sort of players online it can be exciting and fun. Unfortunately the only gripe with the game is you CANNOT choose your competition from your friends list. Which makes the game a bit pointless to some. I wish I could race against my friends without hoping to bump into them on a cold winter night.

The reason I don't play RPGS or sims is because they bore the hell out of me. However, I don't consider them subpar games, I just consider them not for me. GT5 prologue is a step in the right direction for those who like car games serious. If thats not you, then don't buy it or play it. I think its worth a try even for non believers. I didn't like GT3 at all, but i'm figuring I like prologue because its smaller and getting to the best cars is relatively easier.

Besides, like I said, it can be fun if its a close race. But not unlike real racing if most people crash on the first corner and you get away unscathed, your going to be racing alone the whole duration.

Upon loading up the USA version of GT5-P for the very first time, it checks to see if your PS3's fw is up-to-date or not, and if not, proceeds to install PS3 fw 2.17...a slow and lengthy process, indeed.

If at any time during update procedure, if the A/C power goes off, your PS3 will be fucked up big time...that is a situation nobody wants to be in should that, gasp, occur. Might as well make that useless PS3 console a nice big fat doorstop...

The firmware update went nice and smooth without any problems for me... ^_~

The bonus exclusive Blu-Ray "Beyond the Apex" Gran Turismo documentary is presented in both English and in English with French subtitles for your viewing pleasure...

ME TOO. This and blazblue are on my kill-if-I-have-to list.
Until that day GT5P will do just fine.
Smoking Japanese players with a S2000? priceless. And it is very rewarding because it is so hard.

I've not played a Gran Turismo game and I don't play driving games in general so this information could be wrong, but I think the lack of damage in GT is due to licensing issues. Manufacturers are paid a fee to feature their vehicles in the game with accurate 3D models of actual production models and more importantly the logo. And the manufacturers don't want people damaging the cars. Especially when deals must be negotiated with multiple auto companies, it would look really bad if company A's cars could be damaged but company B's cars cannot.

Take a look at games where cars can get damaged. There are no company names or logos anywhere, and the cars also have generic names as well.

But again, I've not played any of these games more than once so I could be wrong.

At the very least, Project Gotham Racing 2 and Forza Motorsport disagree with you. Nothing quite like driving a fully logo'd and smashed-up Ferrari F50 :D

Is Gran Turismo IV still worth buying, in light of this, and the full GT V game coming out? While I know that GT V will have a TON of content, I am concerned about recycled tracks and cars.

Oh sure, you can pick up the USA PS2 region ver. of Gran Turismo 4 on the cheap for a mere $19.99 USD nowdays and it still has built-in support for all the GT compatible Logitech steering wheels including the Driving Force Pro version.

For the North American market, Logitech will be bringing out it's latest PS3 version Logitech Driving Force GT out May 20th, 2008 for use with both the GT5-P demo and eventual release of GT-5... ^_~

The new Logitech Driving Force GT wheels in @ Gamestop!

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The local Gamestop stores in my area have gotten their shipment in of the Playstation 3 Logitech Driving Force GT force-feedback steering wheels early. It retails for a reasonable $149.99 USD. Not a bad price considering that the earlier iteration of the PS2 Logitech Driving Force Pro retailed at $199.99 USD at debut lauch for use with PS2 GT-4... ^_~

Of course, with the appropiate PC Logitech Momo Force drivers, you can use any PS2 or PS3 Logitech steering wheel on a PC platform setup. No need to shell out cash for two seperate Logitech steering wheels, btw. Make it do double duty, PC and console-wise. ^_~

I know it's cheap, but again, my concern is that all of the tracks and cars from game will be in V-and I will eventually get a PS3. Incidentally, that's my same concern with picking up 3: A-Spec.

GT3 has... erm... I think it was Special Stage Route 7, and some rally tracks that didn't reappear in GT4. I'm fairly sure there were other tracks, but that's the only one I missed. It also has smoother physics and makes for much easier drifting... my main reason for buying it was that I had borrowed it from a friend and unlocked the F1, and it didn't look like that was going to happen in GT4.

A good wheel makes the game so much better. Smoother = faster.

I played GT3 to death, won all the races and got golds in all but two license tests and by that time I'd had enough. Some of the races literally put me to sleep (the Toyota Vitz race around the test track... snoooooooze...). I haven't seen that much from GT5 to make me want to dive back into the series (I skipped GT4). When/if I get a PS3, I'd be more inclined to go for GRID/DiRT.
