Xbox 360 and japan

Post by mr_m0nks »

ok being the nosy git that i am, after my best run so far on Ikaruga i had a bit of a snoop at the gamer cards of some of the people around me (at about 5300 on the leaderboard) i also had a look at some of the top players

not surprisingly quite a few were japanese, however after a bit more snooping i discovered something else

i must have looked at about 11 japanese gamer cards

not one had played halo3

now im sorry what was possibly one of the most heavily marketed and publicised games in history and not one out of of eleven people that i checked, from the one country you want people to buy your frickin videogames in had even played it?

there were plenty other western titles mind you (crackdown seemed quite popular)

now whatever your opinions on halo 3 are i don't know anyone with a 360 who doesnt have halo 3

maybe i looked at the only 11 japanese 360 users who dont play halo 3 but im wondering if there is a fundamental reason for this.

i know a few people on the boards here live in japan

could any of them shed light to this??

maybe japan escaped the halo hype

I heard something about a lot of asians getting motion sickness with FPS, and it running in the family.

Don't know if that holds any truth, but I'm not a fan of any shooting game that isn't Team Fortress 2. You know, the one that requires cooperation and team work.

It isn't at all surprising that people dislike Halo - like myself - but it's odd that you mention Crackdown as well. I ordered Crackdown literally 2 days ago thanks to another forum's sub-forum constantly recommending it. Same with Earth Defense Force, which turned out to be fantastic.

EDF is at least different. Halo is your typical FPS and about as basic as you can get in comparison. There's plenty of games out there which happen to have replayability and enjoyment that aren't FPS, and are also on the 360. Right now I've gotten back into Dead Rising and it's still really good (although it's aged in comparison to say, DMC4).

I own about 10 360 games and a Japanese Xbox 360, and none of them are FPS. To be fair, I don't DISLIKE FPS entirely, they just don't mix with me on consoles. The lack of mouse control irks me, especially considering that the 360 has USB ports right on front of the console.

The games I have now will last me awhile, especially with the achievement fad that's slowly taking me over as well. Plus, XBLA is going to be constantly supported as well.

I've paid for a year's subscription to use the multiplayer aspect, but it isn't entirely necessary. And I'd probably pay for it even if I didn't use it, since $50 a year doesn't really bother me all that much. Unfortunately you're going to have to stick to friends, unless you want people yelling at you on Live. I'd imagine this happens even moreso with Halo 3, considering that, much like the top Hard player in Ikaruga only having Ikaruga on his gamercard, people probably stick to Halo 3 just as much.

the motion sickness thing is just something to hide their xenophobia of all things western. kojima said he couldn't play gta3 for the same reason

The motion sickness thing sounds like complete bull but I believe it, since i have an asian friend who really wanted to play the Metroid Prime series, but just can't, thanks to motion sickness kicking in every tie.

I'm asian and being in a car for more than half an hour or playing most FPS make me want to throw up.

Not near as heavily, but I saw the Mjolnir 1:1 helmet in some game stores when it was new here.

I've never owned a Halo, and don't feel the need to.

Some people just don't like Halo.

I got Halo 3 but only played half the first level, it's been on a shelf ever since. I kind of expected not-Halo-2-in-new-levels.

I am asian and I don't get motion sickness when I play FPS but I do get disoriented. I have a feeling of loss of balance and have a floating feeling. I have played Halo games with my frineds and I am by far the worst player  I also cannot aim or control well. It may have to do with these feelings I have when I play such games. I cannot know?

For the most part. Like me. Halo's okay tho.

Of course, you could say the Japanese are being jerks about MS, because Halo was a very big thing for the Xbox, and the Japanese didn't like the Xbox too well before the 360, from what I hear.

I liked halo 3. I didn't completely go crazy over it though. I also chose to buy project gotham 4 rather than halo 3 when I first saw them on the shelves too.

I also wonder why some people assume that you to like halo you must be a fanatic or that if you have a 360 that you must have halo 3. The 360 has more games than the ps3...sometimes people forget that.

I'm not Asian and don't get motion sickness anytime. But I've heard that Marathon on XBLA makes most people sick. It was really stupid of whoever decided to double the frame rate from the original 30FPS up to 60FPS.

As far as the 360 in Japan, I've been told that the Japanese just don't put up with stuff that doesn't work-and given the 360's track record, that's probably part of the reason it's doing so poorly.

As for the original XBOX-well, look at the size of the darn thing! Most Japanese don't have a whole lot of living space, AFIK, so a console that size wouldn't be popular. Also look at the controllers; I hated the original XBOX controller and I have big hands, which most Japanese don't.

The Nintendo DS is the most popular console in japan by a large margin. So they must be living in closets over there....

That's a stereotype if I've ever heard one. Yes, all Japanese people live on top of each other in apartments that all look alike and are stacked like lego blocks! :|

The Xbox 360 really isn't much smaller than the original.

Duke controller 4 life, btw.

I like the S too, though.

Except, if you go to any decent sized arcade over here, you'll see people playing rows of Halo arcade machines and Counter Strike arcade machines.

I didn't say that they all do, but most Japanese don't have as much living space as Americans, and do like to micro-size things; they're experts at as anyone can tell.

The 360 isn't that much smaller, but you can display it vertically, which wasn't an option with the original XBOX.

That's interesting about Halo in the arcades-but I wonder, if, like Half Life 2 Survivor-they had to strip it down to just about everything but the shooting parts.

I just bought a used XBOX from my store; a nice minty 2005 model, and I think it beats the pants off of the (US) PS2, in terms of games and graphics. No J-RPG's, but I LOVE KOTR! I'm just waiting until MS announces the 720, or whatever they'll call it, and the 360 drops in price, to pick up one of those. (Or until they price the wireless adapter at something reasonable.)
