Snapshot of a Monday afternoon

Post by MX7 »

[Conversation heard outside my window between a young mother and her very young daughter.]

Mother - That's a brick. How do you spell brick? B-R-I...

Girl - (mouths along quietly with her mother)

Mother - ...C-K! Now you! What does brick start with?

Girl - ...

Mother - [very angry] B! B for brick! Buh, how thick are you?

[The conversation fades out of earshot]

It's sort of amazing how little people care about their kids. If I ever become a dad I'm gonna at least read a few books on parenting or something

Considering how some parents act, it's wonder that childbirth isn't listed as a "sexual side-effect" by now.

On the other hand, there are those who go to the other extreme and heap praise and affection on their kids even when the latter is being a terror, and go on to get indignant whenever someone else attempt to do what the parents refuse to (or even suggests it) in response. Weird how so few seem to strike a balance when it comes to child-rearing...

Parents spent the first months of their child's life trying to shut them up, the next couple of years trying to get them to talk, the next several trying to shut them up, and the rest of their lives trying to get their child to talk to them again. How the hell have we dodged extinction this long?

By thrusting kids into unfamiliar continents where they inevitably crush the opposition.
