I'm reposting this:

Good posting of Dreamcast games, Diabollokus. I own over a 100 Dreamcast games myself.

Here are some other games I recommend:

* Half-Life (only exists as bootleg; never issued)
* Looney Tunes: Space Race (Dreamcast version of Mario Kart)
* Ooga Booga (great party game)
* Powerstone / Powerstone 2 (great party games: up to 4 players)
* Propeller Arena (exists as bootleg only; never issued)
* Crazy Taxi
* Samba De Amigo / Samba De Amigo 2000 (gotta have the maracas, I ordered the deluxe edition)
* Sega Tennis 2002
* Street Fighter Alpha 3
* Test Drive Le Mans / Test Drive V-Rally
* Typing of the Dead (need Dreamcast keyboard or get keyboard adapter)
* Vampire Chronicle
* Daytona USA
* Jet Grind Radio (spray painting and vandalism was never so fun)
* Resident Evil: Code Veronica
* Seaman (odd, weird, but fun)
* Sega Bass Fishing (avoid 2) / Sega Marine Fishing (get fishing controller)

Way too lenient.

The must haves:

Street Fighter alpha 3
Mars Matrix
Gunbird 2
Street fighter 3: 3rd strike
Ikaruga
Border Down
REZ
Capcom vs. snk2

REZ and 3rd strike are better on the ps2. 3rd strike even better on the xbox.

And no, the emulation is terrible, only systems below and not including genesis run acceptably. Even then it's better on a PC.

If you don't care about roll canceling, which really makes or breaks characters with useful special moves that have long recovery.

Anyway, Segagaga is definitely a fun RPG to get.

I haven't put much time into the game, actually thinking of selling it since I put all my fighting game time into third strike. But I felt it deserved some recognition as one of the better DC games. I'll edit my post.

Except that the PSX version has better controls (even with the stock pad, though a real arcade stick on the PSX is better still) and the Saturn version is better than them both combined.

I've got all 3 and I'm not sure what happened to the DC version, but it really looks washed out and the controls are very in-precise (even with a stick). I wouldn't recommend it as a "must-have". Street Fighter Double Impact would be my recommendation for a wonderful DC exclusive fighter (I prefer it to 3rd strike being cleaner graphically with more interesting level design and slightly better music... but both are worthy).

The Saturn version (which came out last of the 3 and has all the characters unlocked and pretty much includes the kitchen sink) with the stock 2nd edition US pad (i.e. the Japanese stock pad) or a stick is the best way to play this at home.

Actually I think the MUST HAVE list for the DC has significantly dwindled because many of its best games were ported to other systems. I also wholeheartedly agree with llabnip and neon's points on the street fighter games (though where the two disagree on Alpha 3 I side with llabnip--I've owned all three and think the saturn version looks and plays the best.)

Really, by now my list has gotten pretty small (ONLY EXCLUSIVE PORTS LISTED):

Street Fighter III: DI
Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 2 (import version preferred)
KOF: Dream match (add others as desired)
Trizeal
Border Down
Bangai-o
Zero Gunner 2
Mars Matrix
Giga Wing 1 & 2
Shenmue 1 & 2 (if you dig this kind of thing)
Cannon Spike (very short, but I dug it)
Power Stone 1 & 2

And uh...yeah. Unfortunately, so many of the top DC games eventually got ported, sometimes with better results. Oh, and someone listed Maken X, please AVOID!

DC version is based on SFZ3 Upper on the Naomi. From what I understand, it's actually a faithful port of that version of SFZ3. Of course, nobody played Upper because V-Ism and a lot of other properties were dumbed down from the original SFZ3 and the game has smaller sprites for some reason...you're right, the controls do not feel the same as the original SFA3.

Saturn version is also slightly modified for bugs (but still based on the CPS2 version) and does have some moderate (but very fair) loading but yeah, anybody who's played all 3 seem to feel it's the best version of the 3 console SFA3s.

Since I thoroughly dislike and tend to ignore SFA3, I couldn't really notice anything obviously different from the PS and Saturn version myself though.

NO! End the myth. The Saturn version sucks.

The character select music is out of tune, the announcer's voice is crackly, the between-fights music is out of tune, there are slight load times before each fight (a la xmen vs. sf) all in all it's just plain shite next to the arcade. Also you can't skip through the in-between fight stuff like in DC/arcade

I was recommending SFA3 as a good game, the DC port sucks too, don't get me wrong. Only way to go with this one is the arcade.

Soon I'll have the cab... :mrgreen:

The PSX port might actually be the best, shockingly enough. If you use the ps2's ability to eliminate the psx's load times. I haven't tried this since my ps2 can't really do it...I've got a weird modchip installed.

It's my favourite fighter, I've 1cced it on US defaults in MAME (5 stars iirc on console). but enough blather from me (I can go on about this game even more, surprisingly :P

That's the truth, man. Yeah, arcade only for the hardcore. Casual players probably wouldn't notice/care about the version differences anyway.

Personally, I prefer the Dreamcast version of Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Yes, the Saturn has bigger sprites and sounds better and etc. etc. etc., but it has pixel-mesh transparencies, and the DC version just looks nicer.

Err, then what did you mean? I mean, it's not like the home versions are considerably worse or anything since they have 4 new characters (not counting Evil Ryu, Shin Bison, and Shin Akuma). I'd definitely say the only people who have to go with the arcade version are the competitive players who need arcade perfection to compete with others over the arcade version. Everybody else couldn't really tell what's majorly wrong with the home versions. Isn't that what you were implying as well?

No one made any comparisons to the arcade (llabnip specifically said Saturn version was 'the best way to play at home).

Perhaps it makes more difference to a fan of the game than to someone who despises it, but yes, none of the home versions are perfect, and since the mame version is available there's no reason for anyone to play anything less than perfect. That's all that I meant.

I also wanted to end the rumour that the Saturn version is better than the arcade, when, speaking as someone who's experienced both, it's not.

Heaven forbid my hardcoreity be compromised, though :wink:

Hmm, bunch of posts missing. I'll just quote myself since that's mostly what it involved anyways. Keep in mind these are indisputable FACTS which keep the game from being arcade perfect.
The character select music is out of tune, the announcer's voice is crackly, the between-fights music is out of tune, there are slight load times before each fight (a la xmen vs. sf). Also you can't skip through the in-between fight stuff like in DC/arcade

I only enjoyed a few DC games when it first came out, one of them was Fur fighters. That game was one hell of a challenge to beat.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yeah, a bunch of posts just went AWOL. Anyway, the Saturn version is really amazing. I find the music and announcer to be crisp and really good - not sure why you felt they were subpar. And having all the characters available fromt the start, including bonus characters, a better dramatic battle where you play against every character in existance makes the Saturn version an amazing port - and probably the single best ported fighter on the system. There are also a few reputed bug fixes in the Saturn version which came some time after the Arcade version was released. The in-game art, (very) minimal loading times and phenomenal use of the 4MB cart for tons of animation make this a showpiece for the Saturn's 2D power. It may not be arcade perfect, most of us who love the game find it to be damn close - and does a few things better. Plus it's cheaper than a cab and takes up far less space to boot. There is no home version that can touch it really - and whether or not it stacks up to the Arcade rev (which I think it does quite nicely), it's clearly far from "suck" status as you indicate.

I do, however, slightly prefer Street Fighter Zero 2' (aka Gold) on the SF Collection as the single best fighting engine... but all those characters on Zero 3... they make it worthwhile! Actually, for the Saturn, I'd recommend all the Zero games - SFZ1, SFZ2, SFZ2' and SFZ3 as they are all amazing... plus pick up Capcom Generation 5 for some really classic SF action.

Er... Anyway, this is about Dreamcast... so skip the subpar DC SFA3 and concentrate on things like Garou - Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, KoF series, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and the Capcom vs. SNK series (CvSNK2 is a particular favoraite of mine).

OK, I feel better. For a moment I thought I got heavily modded because I referred to Twitch's Triple K tiger as 'kkk tiger'--which admittedly is pretty offensive, but also flat out rediculous.

Um, anyway, yeah. I like the super dramatic battle version where you fight the world. I like the bigger (and what look to me like better) graphics. But honestly it is all opinion I guess. If I was forced to choose, I'd go with the saturn version and do not consider its superiority a myth, but clearly others disagree. Really, if you must chose, I say go with Alpha 2 or Street Fighter 3 and screw off alpha 3, more characters does not = 'best'.

The reason I prefer Alpha 3 to 2 is the 'atmosphere...' the crazy announcer telling me engrishy things like that I have "FISTS OF GOOOOOOOOOD." So the severe downsampling of this and the two musical themes I mentioned just grate on my nerves and make the game a lot less enjoyable. Llabnip - do a direct comparison with the DC version, if you care - I can assure you it exists. Or not, ignorance is bliss :P

The Dramatic battle (which I never use) and the enhugening of the characters (they go off the edge of the screen at times, it bugs meh) doesn't make it better to me either. Though technically speaking I'll admit the graphics are better.

The only gameplay difference between 3 and 2 seems to be some reversal move in 2 accompanied by this little oval tornado graphic...yeah, wish I knew the proper term :/ and the super bars don't start out filled, you can't use all 3 at once, etc.

I think we can all agree third strike is excellent at any rate...it's owning me so hard at the moment. I can't parry to save my life.

Played Saturn alpha 3 with a friend of mine today. It was enjoyable...looks excellent in RGB (what doesn't?). She even beat me a few times, though I wasn't using Sakura those times of course ;) Just now I had some good times with Dramatic Battle.

I'll admit I was wrong to say it sucked...as a fan of the game it was $80ish well spent. Damn near impossible to play with the Saturn pad though, I need to get a good Sanwa stick for my Saturn.

At any rate, if any of you n00bs want to get on kaillera and play me, shoot me a pm. I will win, guaranteed :twisted: [/trolling to try to get competition]
