Seen the Johnny Chung Lee video on the Wii a little while ago, and all the other Web Cam / IR videos on the PC. Made me think how this could be applied to the Shmup genre. It could possibly take a game to multiple perspective angles like Ether Vapor, but still maintain an "open" environment.
The big challenge would be to not create another rail style shooter like Panzer or Sin and Punishment, but rather have a fixed angle, similar to Under Defeat, which allows part of the horizon to be within the the viewing angle. This will keep the original horizontal view point, but allow the player to have slight control in the "up and down" motion. It could be taken to a level where your required to kill enemy's from different playing fields.
BTW I have no knowledge in game development, and probably no interest in developing this idea, but wanted to present an idea for feedback and perhaps spark an interest in creating such a game.
Head Tracking Shmup?
Not sure how well this would translate to a genre with 2D game play. I think there will be interesting games using head tracking, but I don't think they'll be shmups.
