oh and on another note about a year ago i went to a video games exhibition at the science museum in London. i remember playing a shooter there which just consisted of a series of boss runs against an evolving boss. each level he just kept getting bigger and meaner with more weapons and stuff, i also remember most of it been green against a dark background.
any ideas what game this is and what format??
i just cant remember

Welcome!
Right away I'd recommend the following:
PS2
-----
Gradius V
Raiden III (old-school, but plenty of fun)
Shikigami no Shiro 1-2 (released in the US as Mobile Light Force 2 and Castle Shikigami, respectively - unsure of what Europe got...)
R-Type Final (doesn't get as much love here as R-Type Delta, but it's still great)
If you're looking to expand into PS1 gaming, there are loads of great choices:
G-Darius
Einhander
Raystorm
RayCrisis
R-Type Delta
R-Types
Gradius Gaiden (Japanese only release, I think)
Gekioh: Shooting King (aka Shienryu)
Raiden Project
Raiden DX
There's more, but I'm sure someone else here will recommend the ones they think are most appropriate.
MegaDrive
-----
Thunderforce IV (brilliant, arguably the best shmup on the platform)
Gaiares (most shmup fans have a love/hate relationship w/ it)
Fire Shark (solid port of a great game)
Truxton/Tatsujin (decent port of a good Toaplan game)
V-V/Grindstormer (see Truxton)
Bio-Hazard Battle/Crying (fun bio-shmup)
There are lots of other quality shmups on the MD/Genesis as well!
GBA
-----
Gradius Galaxies/Generations
Iridion 2 (Iridion 3D is crap, don't bother)
You could foray into older GB games as well, like Nemesis/Gradius, Gradius: Interstellar Assault (a personal fav), Project S-11 (an okay GB Color shmups), Sagaia (Darius game), etc.

Warning Forever is the name and it's a freeware game for Windows. Which is fortunate really, because if you're going to get into buying shoot 'em ups, you'll be needing that cash...mr_m0nks wrote:

well i always preferred Retograde anyway! got through a few joysticks playing that!!
thanks for the advice everyone, gonna look a few of them up.
and thanks for the heads up on Warning Forever! what a fantastic idea for a game!
i'm surprised a more commercial venture hasn't picked up on the idea

I have to agree..certainly sounds like warning forever to me.Rupert H wrote:Warning Forever is the name and it's a freeware game for Windows. Which is fortuante really, because if you're going to get into buying shoot 'em ups, you'll be needing that cash...mr_m0nks wrote:

In regards to PSX, I didn't see Soukygurentai listed above. Although it's not as good as it's saturn release...since you don't have a saturn, this is the next best thing. Great game.
Also have to agree on the Japanese cave releases mentioned.
Additionally, assuming you have a pc, don't rule that out as a hardware option either. There are tons of Emulators that run perfect/near perfect in regards to their counterparts. CPS/CPS2, Mame, Saturn...to name a few. There are also few gems that have been made for pc only (and a few of them freeware).

If you want a quick fix AND for free check the freeware doujin scene. Lots of great stuff there.
Like (these are pretty much the best):
Blue Wish Resurrection
Parsec47 (and the stuff from kenta cho/ABA games)
CHO-REN-SHA
G-TYPE
Radio Zonde
all can be found at shoot the core (great site)

Yep, deffo warning forever. I stood there for ages, wiping other peoples scores from it. Had a little crowd round me. It was awesome.vGood to meet someone else who went to the Game On show! It re-affirmed my love to videogames. Did you check out the Gradius V stand? I think you would like this if you like Hori's like Amalyte. Prepare to be blown awaymr_m0nks wrote:hi guys,

If you enjoyed that game, you will be in for a major treat whenever they finally put Ikaruga on XBLA. It's coming soon(not sure when), but it should really knock your socks off. Don't miss it.mr_m0nks wrote:hi guys,
